Ashley’s tweet caused a social media
<
firestorm. Fans speculated about what I’d
supposedly done to Jason. The polls
continued, but now “End” was gaining
traction. Late that night, Jason tweeted: [Lynn
and I broke up amicably. There’s no drama
here.] Ashley’s tweet vanished. But the fans
weren’t buying it. Most assumed he was
covering for me, that he’d pressured Ashley to
delete her tweet. Suddenly, the internet was
demanding I apologize to Jason. But no one
would tell me what I’d done wrong.
At our high school reunion, Ashley saw me
enter the room and went off. “Well, well, if it
isn’t the princess who dumped Jason and ran off to Europe. You actually have the nerve to
come back?” The room fell silent. A few old
<
friends gestured for me to sit down, telling
me to ignore her. But Ashley wasn’t done.
“You were so happy dating him, then you just
ditched him to go study abroad. You know his
mom almost…” “Enough,” a male voice
interrupted. All eyes turned to Jason. “It’s
Jason! He never comes to these things,”
someone whispered. “I know, the class
president has invited him like a million times.”
Ashley glared at me and shut up.
My seat was close to where Jason was
standing. It had been two weeks since our
unexpected encounter at the airport. “Long
time no see, Lynn.” He used my name, so I
couldn’t pretend I hadn’t heard him. “Long
time no see.” The class president, clearly
<
unprepared for Jason’s arrival, scrambled to
add a chair beside me. Time really does
change things. We’d gone from talking non-
stop to sitting in awkward silence.
After the reunion, I went to the restroom.
Coming out, I saw Jason, masked and
dressed in black, leaning against the wall, like
he was waiting for someone. As I walked
past, he spoke. “Want to talk?” I agreed.

Jason drove me to the beach. We sat on the
sand, the cool night air brushing our faces. “How have you been?” I asked the man I’d loved for five years. “Pretty good,” Jason
said. “You?” I smiled and nodded. “Me too.”
<
Just thought about you a lot, I didn’t add. He
was about to get married. I was his past.
We talked about how we met, our grades, old
promises, shared memories. A strange
thought crept into my mind. Our ending didn’t
match our beginning. This wasn’t how it was
supposed to be with Jason and me. But it
was how it was.
We talked until past ten. Then Jason asked,
“Did you see it? The email I sent you on your
eighteenth birthday.” I smiled. “Of course, I
saw it.” He’d told me to wait for him, to give him time. He’d find a way to earn his place in my future. I waited. And I waited. And what I got was news of his impending wedding. “So,
<
now…” He trailed off as his phone rang.
The night was quiet. Quiet enough to hear the
voice on the other end. “Jason, Mom’s asking
when you’re coming home.” A young woman’s
voice. She
was living with Jason’s mom. She
was calling him home.
Jason’s tone was flat. “Soon. I’ll be there
soon.” There were muffled sounds from the
other end, then an older woman’s voice.
“Jason, Mom misses you. When are you
coming home? I saw you on the
entertainment news today. Were you with
Lynn again? You’re about to get married. Can
you please stop seeing your ex–girlfriend? People are talking.”
Jason ignored his mother. “Mom, I can’t talk
now, I’m driving. I’ll be home soon.” He hung
up, his voice apologetic. “Sorry, I…” I cut him
off. “Jason, it’s okay. Your mom and… she’s
waiting for you at home. I don’t think we’ll see
each other again.” I turned to leave, but Jason grabbed my wrist, his voice urgent. “Lynn…”

It was the year Jason was broke as a joke. I dumped him and took off for Europe to study.
Years later, he’s a huge movie star, and rumors
are swirling about him getting married. In an interview, Jason, looking at no one in particular, says, “If I get married, will you come?” That night, he was trending all over social media.

The day Jason won Best Actor, a reporter
asked him about his future plans. Jason smiled,
“Marriage.” The other celebrities present
practically choked on their champagne. The
reporter stammered, “Getting married at the
peak of your career, won’t you regret it?” Jason
simply shook his head. Then, looking straight
into the camera, he asked, “If I get married, will
you come?”
The interview went viral. #JasonToWed
#WillYouComeToTheWedding. His fans went
<
nuts. [@JasonAreYouCrazy chasing you for
three years and you’re a hopeless romantic?!]
[@OMG who is she?! Making Jason announce
marriage at his peak, he must be head over
heels!] [@We slaved over your fan accounts and
you’re just gonna get married? How could you
do this to us?!]
When I saw the trending topics, I knew he was
talking to me. Years ago, when we broke up, I’d
jokingly asked him, “If you ever get married, will
you invite me?” He said yes. I just didn’t realize
it would be five years later, with him at
successful actor.
My high school group chat, usually dormant,
exploded with the news. [@Jason’s getting
married? To who?!] [@No clue, but it sure ain’t
gonna be Lynn.] [@Remember when someone
dumped him because he was broke? Now he’s raking in millions, I wonder if she regrets it.] I
scrolled through the messages, a wave of
nostalgia washing over me. A friend had asked
<
me the same thing when Jason’s career first
took off. “Jason’s got a ton of fangirls now, two years later, I’m still curious, do you regret it?”
I’d laughed it off. “No regrets. His future was
more important than our relationship.”
