Chapter 4
When he went to buy me food, he left his coal in the room.
I found a used lipstick in his coat pocket.
I understood it was her silent–provocation, and he allowed it.
When he came back, I handed him the lipstick without a word.
He stared at me, his eyes full of complex emotions.
I thought he would lie, maybe even get impatient.
But he admitted it calmly.
He sighed, looking at me with a hint of guilt.
“I’m sorry. I let you down and couldn’t give our daughter a home.”
I cut him off.
“So, you want a divorce, right? While our premature daughter is still in the incubator, and I’m just five days out of a
life–threatening situation?”
He lowered his head slightly, then looked at me with unusual determination.
Chapter 4
His eyes were as determined as before, when he promised to take care of me for life during our toughest times.
“She wants to marry me. I promised her, and I can’t keep her waiting.”
“What do you take me for? A desperate choice when you were down and out? A tool to bear your children? Or someone to discard after your success?” I couldn’t hold back anymore screamed at him, my face twisted in anger.

He froze, then grabbed some tissues and repeatedly wiped my
lears.
“I’m sorry, it’s my fault.”
He kept apologizing, not because he truly felt sorry, but to ease his guilt.
But the grievances I’ve suffered over the years poured out with my lears, unstoppable.
After a while, seeing no effect, he finally got impatient. His eyes were full of blame and annoyance.
“Leslie, did you really think I’d feel sorry for your tears? You’re just making me more annoyed.”
My tears stopped instantly. I looked at him blankly.
He stared at me, expressionless, his eyes cold and devoid of warmth.

“You only got with me because I graduated from the Glory University. If I had graduated from a technical school, would you have supported me so unconditionally? I admit I’m at fault. If you want more money, just say so.”
I was stunned.
When he had no startup capital, I gave him all my savings.
When he lost money, I took on hundreds of thousands in bank loans.
I only graduated from a regular university. My degree couldn’t compare to his.
But back then, I had a job everyone envied.
He needed me, so I quit without hesitation.
I put my fate in his hands.
I never expected him to think of me this way.
Looking at this familiar man, he suddenly felt like a stranger.
It was like I never really knew him.
