Chapter 10
After that. Sophie was admitted to a mental hospital for treatment by Arthur.
Arthur started showing up around us more often.
One day, as I was picking Lucy up from school, Arthur got out of his car and tried to take Lucy’s backpack.
I stepped back with Lucy, watching him cautiously.
His hand froze in mid–air, looking a bit embarrassed.
“Leslie. I was wrong before. I just want to make it up to you both. I’ll do anything you ask.”
‘Mom, I don’t want dad anymore. Let’s go,” Lucy said, hiding behind me and hugging me tightly.
Arthur’s face darkened for a moment.
I scoffed. “Then transfer all your assets to me.”
Arthur was surprised by my request and stayed silent for a long
time.
A few days later, he waited outside our house. He looked at me with determination and said he’d give me all his money if I agreed to remarry him.

I felt sick to my stomach.

I couldn’t believe Arthur had the nerve to propose remarriage.
Laughing coldly, I pointed to the nearby lake where the floodgates were opening.
I said slowly, “Jump in there, and I’ll agree right away.”
Arthur looked hurt, his eyes getting watery.
“Do you have to treat me like this?”
“Get lost! The world would be better off without people like you!”
“Don’t play the victim here, you jerk! I hope you die a horrible death in the streets!”
He turned pale, his lips trembling, unable to speak.
He looked at me like I was a stranger, as if wondering how I’d changed so much.
After school, Arthur would always stand nearby, watching us. He didn’t bother us, just looked on with guilty eyes.
One time, as I was crossing the street with Lucy to buy ice cream, a large truck suddenly appeared around the corner, heading towards the crowd.

In that moment, I froze. My mind went blank, not knowing how
to react.
When the truck was just a few meters away, I snapped back to reality. I held Lucy light, ready to run, but it was too late.
4 felt hopeless, preparing for death.
Suddenly, someone pushed me hard from behind. Lucy and I barely missed the truck.
But the crowd behind us looked horrified.
I slowly turned around and saw something I’ll never forget.
The once lively person was now a bloody mess on the road.
His phone lay nearby, showing a picture of Lucy as a newborn.
If he had any last breath left, he would’ve used all his strength to tell Lucy, “Lucy, I’m sorry! I couldn’t be your hero forever.”
