Beta Thomas dragged his gaze up to me.
“You knew?”
“Oh it was very obvious!” I exclaimed. “You were the one trying to break me up with Lucien so that you can make Charm happy, didn’t you?” I laughed when he muttered something under his breath.
“You know. It seems we‘ re just the same after all, Beta. We always pour our hearts out at the wrong people.”
“Vesta-”
I held out a hand, my laugh becoming less mocking and more real. I wiped away those tears that blurred my sight. “I’m so sorry for you, Tom. But you don’t need to make it up to me. Your confession is enough to complete my day.”
“Why?” He asked with those innocent eyes, still oblivious to what I’m feeling.
“That you yourself confirmed that Alpha

Lucien had always prioritized Charmaine more than me–hence why Charm is also entertaining the Alpha with wide open arms. Perhaps with wide open legs too!” I chuckled hysterically at the last words I just spat.
Now I know. Now…it made me breathe comfortably even more.
“Good luck in convincing the Alpha to rest and eat. Oh–and don’t forget that the pack‘ s mating moon celebration is coming. The Alpha must not miss to congratulate all those who just had their mating ceremony in the Brightheart Pack. It’s a must to attend!”

Days passed and my week ended, only for it to start again. And then Friday came again without giving warning, as if my days of overworking no longer tell me what day it
was.
My weekends were brief. I spent it reading

books, strolling through malls while avoiding the couples who were so publicly displaying their affection, drinking coffees and milkshakes, and having dinner with colleagues
I was just fixing my hair as I strode in the restroom when a cold hand caressed my hair
“Vesta.”
1 pivoted and I was met with a wall of such a thin body and bland scent.
“Lu–Alpha Lucien?” I brought a hand to my mouth. He’s so thin and sickly and pale!
I almost thought he’s a walking skeleton and the rumors of this building being haunted is true
“What happened to you?” It seems Alpha Lucien is the particular ghost who likes to haunt and scare me.
He ignored my question and tried to stroke

my cheek with his cold and pale thumb. “I need to talk to you.”
I jerked my face away from his reach.
“How did you get inside the building?”
“Through the door, of course.” No amusement shone in his eyes. His voice was so soft and lifeless, as if he’s just patiently waiting for the Moon Goddess to take his life. “Vesta.”
“You‘ re here again no matter how I turned you down.” Looking at him, it seems I can’t even hear him breathe. His scent is…he doesn’t have a scent either.
He’s using a scent mask. I chuckled to myself, that’s probably the reason why even the guards didn’t detect him. No sound. No scent.
“So this is how desperate you are, then.” Sometimes, I’d like to think that he’s been neglecting his duty as the Alpha every time he sneaks up on me. Just like now.
“I was just about to go home,” I said as a

the lingering unease that shrouded us.
“I want to have a proper talk with you,‘ he paused for a moment as if to wait to let those words sink in my mind first before adding, “Will you come with me tonight?”
His fragileness made me think of him. between ridiculous and spooky.
“What do you think my answer will be?” I crossed my arms.
At first, I wanted to just shove him away like those times he visited me. Yet
something about his current appearance made me rethink my decision. Moonlight leaked in the restroom from the slightly gaping windows, bathing Lucien‘ s form in a more eerie ghostly glow.
Maybe it was the acceptance of defeat I saw in his eyes or the softness of his broken voice. Perhaps both.
“Okay, I’ll come with you. I don’t have anything interesting to do tomorrow

anyway so I’ll probably sleep my ass after tonight.”
My response was like a bright sun that poured in his eyes. “Thank you.”
He held both of my shoulders, his short- lived smile was more eerie than genuine. His yellow teeth make me realize he‘ s really been neglecting his Alpha duties and himself.
I picked up my bag and fell to a step beside him as we exited the restroom. “Where are we going?”
“You’ll soon know,” Lucien answered with a smirk–the only other expression I saw him tonight aside from being almost like a ghost. “I’m taking you somewhere quiet. Somewhere sacred.”
I swallowed. Starmoon Restaurant is not quiet. His villa…it’s quiet but not sacred. The penthouse? It’s neither.
I strode into his much smaller and less expensive car, as if his taste in things also

vanished along with his lack of interest in living further.
The drive to wherever we‘ re going was spent by me silently thinking and ticking off the list of our possible destinations.
Minutes later, I gave up and just leaned in the car seat, handing whatever my fate tonight to the Moon Goddess.
