Chapter 8
I walked quickly with Keith trailing unsteadily behind me and muttered to himself, “Liar. You like me so much, but you’re pretending otherwise!”
Back at the hotel, I lay on the bed, thinking that saying I didn’t like Keith wasn’t as difficult as I’d imagined. Six years of affection were nothing more than fragmented memories scattered and broken.
The next day, I took the last of Keith’s belongings that he’d left with me to his company and returned them to his assistant. It was a credit card, which I had never used, but it was still something that needed to be given back to someone he trusted.
As I stepped onto the roadside, a speeding sports car almost hit me. When I stood up, I noticed that my arm and leg were scraped and bleeding. Keith’s assistant rushed over

in a panic. “Miss Sherman, are you alright? Should I take you to the hospital?”
I smiled faintly. “It’s nothing. Just a small injury. I’ll go by myself.”
At that time, Keith was attending a business event with Sadie, helping her establish connections in the financial industry. As Sadie held his arm, Keith felt a pang of emptiness.
He thought it would’ve been better if it were Zoey. Her lively chatter always kept his mind occupied, filling the air with energy. Sadie, on the other hand, carried an air of sophistication that felt stifling and dull.
When his assistant saw Keith drinking alone, he casually mentioned what had happened earlier that day. “What did you just say? Zoey was almost hit by a car? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
The assistant stammered in panic, “Sir, you broke off the engagement with Miss.

Sherman. I thought…
“You thought? Who gave you the right to think?” Keith shouted. “As long as I’m not married, Zoey is still my fiancée!”
Without another word, Keith stormed out. Sadie tried to stop him but only managed to touch the corner of his coat. This event was crucial for her. Everyone had come
because of Keith and now, he’d left her
behind for someone he was no longer
engaged to. The guests began to leave, some even mocking her openly.
Sadie’s family was no longer on the same level as Keith’s family. Everyone in the circle knew they were on the brink of bankruptcy. Tonight was her one chance and it had all been ruined. Sadie’s eyes burned with hatred.
When Keith arrived at the hospital, my wounds had already been bandaged. He pulled me into his arms, relief and joy spilling from his voice. “Thank goodness, Zoey! I’m so glad you’re okay. I was so

scared.”
I frowned and pushed him away. “Keith, don’t do this. It’ll make people
misunderstand.”
“Misunderstand what? And why did you
return the card? Do we need to be so clear about everything between us?”
“Yes, we do,” I said firmly. “Don’t forget, Keith–we’ve already broken off our engagement. I don’t want to be seen as someone who’s after your family’s money.”
Keith bit his lip, anger flickering in his eyes, but he held it back. “Zoey, if you want, we can get engaged again. Then, we’ll get married. This time, I’ll be the one to propose. What do you think?”
“No! Keith, I don’t like you anymore. Whoever I end up engaged to in the future, it won’t be you.” I turned and walked away without looking back.
His voice followed me, growing fainter. “Zoey, please stop this. Don’t do this to me!”

In the days that followed, Keith kept calling and texting me. I blocked him completely. I found him so annoying now. Maybe that’s what happens when love fades–the things you once cherished start to feel like a burden.
It wasn’t until he found out I’d sold my parents‘ house that he finally realized I wasn’t just throwing a tantrum.
