Her grandfather had told her that his condition was eerily similar to what her mother had experienced before she passed away.
Chapter 14
The doctors couldn’t find a cause for the illness, eventually concluding that the Stuarts must carry some unknown recessive genetic disorder. Her mother and uncle were both unfortunate victims of this hidden curse.
This genetic flaw led to the loss of cerebral cortex function, rendering them both in a vegetative state.
These past two years, she had been dedicated to developing a drug that could repair the nerve cells in the cerebral cortex. If she succeeded, there was a chance her uncle could wake up.
The treatment would also be a lifeline for others who had fallen into a similar state for various reasons.
Like always, she spent a few moments talking to Everett, her uncle.
Her presence wasn’t required in the lab for the time being, so she decided to take this opportunity to head back to the Cobb Mansion and settle some unfinished business.
As she exited the hospital building and made her way toward the parking lot, someone suddenly appeared at the entrance.
“Mrs. Ashworth?”
Hearing the familiar voice, Lucille looked up to find a strikingly handsome young man walking toward her.
She knew him. He was August, the eldest son of the Blairs, one of the four powerful families in Cholis’s high society. He was also one of Flint’s closest friends.
“Hello, Mr. Blair,” she greeted him politely.
“There’s no need to be so formal, Mrs. Ashworth. Just call me August.”
“August was particularly friendly, noting that she had just come from the inpatient department. He guessed her purpose and asked, Are you visiting your uncle?”
“Yeah,” Lucille nodded, but something crossed her mind, and she added, “Oh, by the way, Mr. Blair, Flint and I have divorced. From now on, you can just call me Ms. Stuart, or use my name directly.”
She was better left behind “Mrs. Ashworth” title.
Flint wouldn’t like it, and to be honest, neither did she.
August was stunned for a moment, his eyes widening in disbelief. “What? Does Flint decide to divorce you?”
Last week, he had heard from Amber that Ellie was returning to the country and Flint was planning to divorce Lucille. He didn’t believe it at the time.
Flint divorced his loving wife for an ex who abandoned him.
What kind of man does that?
August stared at Lucille’s composed expression. She wasn’t angry or resentful. How could anyone let go of such a good wife?
If I were him, I’d cherish this girl and wouldn’t waste time tangled up with some ex.
“Yeah, it’s already done. Just remember to use the right title to address me from now on.” Lucille shrugged, unconcerned, and casually reminded August before saying goodbye.
Whenever Lucille walked away, August suddenly remembered something. He quickly snapped several photos of her retreating figure.
At the Cobb Mansion.
When Lucille returned to the Cobb Mansion, it was right around dinner time.
“Ms. Lucille, welcome back.”
The Cobbs members in the living room, who were about to sit down for dinner, were momentarily stunned by her arrival. But they quickly stood up, warmly welcoming her.
“Lucy, you’re back! Why didn’t you let Mom know beforehand?”
Dahlia affectionately clasped Lucille’s hand, her tone filled with concern, playing the part of the loving mother perfectly.
If Lucille hadn’t uncovered certain truths, she might have felt a bit touched by this.

Her eyes coolly fell on Dahlia’s false smile. Slowly, she slipped her hand out of Dahlia’s grip and replied with a smile, “This is my
home. I’ll come back whenever I want. Or do I need to give you a heads–up?”
Dahlia was momentarily caught off guard by Lucille’s words, a flicker of irritation flashing in her eyes.
After all, she had spent years playing the doting mother in front of Lucille, and now they still needed to use her. It wouldn’t be wise to show her true feelings just yet. So, she hurriedly smothered her anger.
