Chapter 13
Lucille had already been stood up by Flint twice now, and it was starting to get under her skin. She didn’t bother explaining much to Sebastian before abruptly ending the call. What she didn’t know was that just a second before she hung up, her soon–to–be ex- husband had finally picked up her call.
Sitting in her car, Lucille furrowed her eyebrows. It wasn’t just Sebastian who couldn’t figure it out, she was at a loss herself. Just a couple of days ago, Flint was all set to have the lawyer finalize the divorce, but now, when the moment had arrived, he seemed to be dragging his feet.
She certainly wouldn’t be stupid enough to think that Flint had suddenly developed feelings for her.
Unable to unravel the mystery, she decided not to think about it.
After all, if Flint wanted a divorce, it would happen sooner or later. For now, she had more pressing matters to deal with.
Turning her car around, Lucille headed home. Midway, her phone rang.
“Lucille, I’ve dug up everything you asked for. Do you want me to send it over now?” a voice on the other end asked.
“Yeah, email it to me. I’m almost home,” Lucille replied.
After ending the call, a hint of coldness flickered in her eyes. Her grip on the steering wheel tightened.
Back in her downtown apartment, Lucille swiftly opened her email, and a new message popped up instantly.
As she read through the document sent by her contact, a chilling smile slowly curved her lips.
“Just as I thought…”
The document detailed the true background of her stepsister, Oriel Cobb.
Lucille’s father, Garry Cobb, married Kerri Stuarts. Because Garry was a live–in son–in–law, Lucille took Kerri’s surname.
Tragically, Kerri passed away from a neurological disease when Lucille was just two years old.
Garry raised Lucille alone until she was four, never involving himself with any other women. His devotion eventually moved Lucille’s grandfather, who encouraged him to remarry.
Eventually, Garry married Dahlia, who brought along her daughter, Oriel. Naturally, Oriel took on her stepfather’s surname, Cobb.
In her previous life, Garry had played his part so flawlessly that no one ever questioned the true nature of the relationship between the three of them.
Having lost her mother at such a young age, Lucille had always trusted Dahlia, who treated her as if Lucille was her daughter after marrying into the family.
It wasn’t until the moment before her death in her past life that she accidentally stumbled upon a yellowed photograph in Garry’s study. The picture showed a much younger Garry alongside Dahlia. The apparent age in the photo made it clear that this was taken long before Garry married her mother.
This discovery raised the suspicion that Garry might have known Dahlia and been involved with her even before marrying Lucille’s mother.
The so–called “stepdaughter“, Oriel, might not have been a stepdaughter at all, but rather the illegitimate offspring of an affair between the two.
Unfortunately, Lucille never got the chance to investigate further; she died in a car accident before she could uncover the truth.
Now, reading the information she got, Lucille’s eyes grew colder, laced with a deep sense of mockery.
Her delicate, pale fingers lightly brushed against Oriel’s name on the page, and her lips curled into a vicious smile.
“If she enjoys being a burden so much, let’s make sure she gets her fill of it,” Lucille murmured to herself.
Somewhere at Covenant Hospital.
“Ms Lucille, you’ve arrived.”
“How’s my uncle doing today?” Lucille asked.
“Mr. Stuart’s condition is still the same, but you can go in and see him. Spend some time talking to him; it might help,” the nurse suggested.

“Alright, I’ll head in now,” Lucille replied, walking towards the ICU.
Inside the room, Lucille’s gaze softened as she looked at the figure lying on the hospital bed. He was her uncle, Everett Stuart.
Two years ago, her uncle had retired from the military, only to suddenly fall into a coma shortly after. It had been two years now,
and he remained in a vegetative state.
