Chapter 11
One day, I would repay today’s humiliation in full.
As this thought took hold, Alicia’s desire grew fiercer, the light in her eyes shining with an increasingly intense ambition. She couldn’t wait to replace the woman who had looked down on her.
However, when she lifted her gaze, she saw that Flint didn’t head off with Lucille to the civil affairs office to finalize their divorce as she had thought. Instead, he was walking back towards her with an expression as cold as ice.
Alicia’s eyes darkened dramatically, but when Flint drew closer, she quickly adjusted her expression to one of pitiful innocence. A look she was sure would win him over.
“Mr. Ashworth…”
Flint’s gaze dropped, and he stared at her without saying a word. Alicia’s heart was ecstatic, and her heartbeat accelerated.
Her cheeks blushed as she met his eyes shyly; her fists clenched with excitement.
She knew that Flint liked her, if not, why didn’t he clarify when Lucille misinterpreted their relationship?
His silence was practically an admission.
When she thought about this, Alicia could already envision herself in the future, holding the coveted title of the CEO’s wife.
Unfortunately, in the next second, her daydream shattered when she heard Flint’s cold voice.
“When Lucille arrived, what did you say to her?”
Alicia’s pupils suddenly shrank at his question, and a flicker of panic flashed in her lowered gaze.
“I… I didn’t say much. When Mrs. Ashworth arrived, she accused me of being a seductress and claimed you weren’t coming home because of… because of me.”
Even though her words trembled with a carefully crafted fear, the subtle pride hidden in the latter half of her statement didn’t go unnoticed.
Flint didn’t bother with further questions. Instead, he just walked past Alicia. Just when she thought Flint believed her story, his cold voice cut through her thoughts.
“Ask her to go to the finance department to settle her salary. She has to leave Ashworth Corporation immediately.”
Alicia felt the blood drain from her face after hearing that.
She snapped her head up to look at Flint, but all she saw was his resolute back, retreating without an ounce of compassion.
“Mr. Ashworth … please …”
She tried to catch up to him, but before she could get far, she was blocked by Sebastian, who had been following a few steps behind Flint.
“Mr. Muller… ”
“Mr. Ashworth despises those who lack self–awareness and stir up trouble. The company has no shortage of secretaries to accompany Mr. Ashworth to events. I can assign you just as easily as I can assign someone else. You’re not special to him.” Sebastian’s blunt words shattered the ambitions Alicia had carefully nurtured, leaving them in pieces.
He made it glaringly clear that the CEO’s choice of an event companion was dictated by Sebastian himself, not because Flint particularly valued her.
“Mrs. Ashworth was right. You’re as foolish as a pig, unfit for any significant occasion. And your biggest mistake was thinking you could fool Mr. Ashworth. You just lost your chance to come clean.”
Panic set in for Alicia, replacing her usual arrogance with a fear she couldn’t shake.
The thought of leaving Ashworth Corporation wasn’t terrified her. It was the fact that Flint had personally fired her which made her scared. How would any other major company dare to hire me now?
I can’t accept it. This doesn’t make sense. Flint hates his wife, doesn’t he? Why didn’t he interrogate his wife, instead of assuming that I had offended Lucille? He’s even gone as far as firing me for her.
Didn’t he hear all the insulting things Lucille had said about him just moments ago?
“Mr. Muller … please, I know I was wrong. Please help me… I won’t dare to do it again…” she pleaded.
