“Because of me?”
“How shameless can you be? Was I the one who got Samantha pregnant?”
Hearing this, Jason glanced at the assistant who had come with him. The assistant, who had admired his mentor and thought they were at the police station for a big case, now looked shocked at hearing this.
Jason, always concerned about his reputation, didn’t want his assistant to hear about his actions, so he sent him outside to buy something. I smiled and stopped him.
“Are you Jason’s new trainee?”
He nodded. “Yes, ma’am.”
“Let me ask you, do you know how bigamy is defined?”
He thought for a moment, then smiled. “Though my focus is on criminal law, I studied bigamy thoroughly in school. If a third party and the involved person publicly maintain the title and behaviors of a married couple, with concrete evidence, bigamy can be established. But it requires specific analysis.”
After he finished, I looked at Jason.
“Your trainee seems to know more than you.”
Jason quickly reacted. “I didn’t! I really didn’t. You know this is all a game. I lost a bet with Samantha, and she asked me to act as her husband for a day.”
I pushed him away.
“For a day as her husband?”
I directly asked Jason, “Was it just in name, or both in name and in reality?”
“You know what you’ve done with her.”
I turned to leave. Jason grabbed me.
“Is this my fault? If you hadn’t been so busy with work and lost our child, would I have gotten involved with Samantha for a child? And this child is from IVF with Samantha! Don’t accuse me of infidelity. I was loyal to you; I just wanted a child.”
Jason spoke as if all the blame lay with me.
“I wanted to have a child with you, but you always refused, using work as an excuse. You even hid the fact that you were pregnant with twins. Who knows, you might be the one cheating, and those twins might not even be mine!”
Jason grabbed my hand. “I’m a lawyer. If you really want a divorce, think carefully. I’ll make sure you leave with nothing.”
He emphasized, “Remember, you’ll take nothing. Don’t think you can define me with bigamy. It’s hard to prove.”
He let go and headed to the station to find Samantha. Before leaving, he said to me, “I’ve known you for over a decade, yet you’re less than Samantha. She knew helping me would mean breaking up with Chris, but she still did it. But you, my wife, haven’t even given me a child.”
