That night, I didn’t wait up for Lily.
She could come home whenever she wanted.
Or not come home at all.
I was sick of this wife, this marriage.
My marriage to Lily had reached an impasse, with no way forward or back.
Might as well just muddle through like this.
On Saturday, Lily spent the whole morning dolling herself up. She said she had lunch plans with some girlfriends and they were going shopping after.
I didn’t ask any questions. I just checked the time and changed into some clothes, getting ready to go out myself.
“You’re going out too?” she asked.
“I’m meeting a friend for lunch.”
“Which friend? Do I know them?”
She asked casually while applying lipstick.
“Emma. You’ve met her.”
“What?”

Too shocked, she smeared her lipstick: “Absolutely not! You can’t have a meal alone with another woman. What’s that about?”
I calmly adjusted my cuffs, not answering.
She came over to stop me.
Only then did I look up at her, saying each word slowly: “How many times have you had meals alone with Ryan? Do I need to remind you? If you

think this kind of thing is inappropriate, why do you keep doing it? Or in your standards, it’s okay for you but not for me?”
She was stunned by the coldness in my eyes, frozen in place.
Just then, her phone rang.
I saw the caller ID and smiled sarcastically: “Your ‘girlfriend‘ is calling to hurry you up.”
With that, I walked out without waiting for her reaction.
I owed Emma a favor for helping me out last time, so I figured I’d treat her to lunch today to repay her.
Emma had a different look today. Her hair was tied up in a bun, and she wore a simple white t–shirt with jeans. She looked youthful and energetic, like a fresh college graduate.
But I didn’t expect the world to be so small.
When I saw Ryan and Lily walk into the same restaurant, I completely lost my appetite.
Emma noticed my sudden change in expression and looked back to see them too: “Do you want to go say hello?”
I shook my head.
Their table had five or six people, men and women.
Ryan and Lily sat side by side, looking intimate.
They were clearly very close, laughing and chatting away, drawing glances from other diners.

I didn’t want to pay attention, but their table got louder and louder. I looked over involuntarily and saw Ryan lean down to kiss Lily on

The others yelled “That doesn’t count!” Ryan smiled as if helpless, then leaned down again, this time kissing her on
“Perfect!” someone shouted.
Emma held up her phone and winked at me.
I stood up and strode over to their table, grabbing Ryan and punching him hard.
