Chapter 47
The halls were buzzing, everyone anticipating Lenore’s downfall from Greenvine High School and the Duncan family’s retaliation. But the morning dragged on without incident.
The bell for lunch had barely rung when Lenore’s phone went off. She glanced at the caller ID, finished the motorcycle blueprint with a distant focus, and then swiped to answer.
“I’m at the gates of Greenvine High School. Get out here now,” a voice growled through the line.
Lenore licked her lips, ended the call, slung her bag over her shoulder, and headed out with the blueprint tucked between her fingers.

Kyle hesitated and then quietly followed. After a few steps, he felt a presence and turned to see Lance. “Why are you following me?” Kyle asked. Lance shushed him with a finger to his lips. “I wanna see Lenore in a fight,” he whispered, clearly impressed with Lenore’s take–down of Carlos. Kyle just shook his head, at a loss for words.
Bonnie hurried over, clutching Kyle’s arm, her worry evident. “Kyle, where’s Lenore?” she asked, her voice tense.
“She just left,” Kyle replied with a sigh, trying to ease her fears. “Don’t worry. I’ve already let my dad know.”
Outside the school gates, Troy watched Lenore stride out with a cold, detached gait, defiance rolling off her in waves. He swallowed his disgust and told his driver to fetch her.
He used to bask in the compliments at Esther’s parent–teacher meetings. Now, he’d do anything to avoid admitting Lenore was his daughter, the one who’d brought him nothing but shame.
Lenore strolled over with hands in her pockets, and she stood on the curb with her uniform fluttering in the wind, exuding a casual, rebellious vibe.
Troy didn’t even step out of the car, his demand sharp and cold. “Get in. We’re going to the Duncan residence to apologize.”
“Apologize?” Lenore rose onto her tiptoes, her delicate, coldly beautiful eyes filled with defiance and a touch of solitude and her raised eyebrows hinting at madness.
“I’d dare to apologize, but would the Duncan family dare accept?” she said, her voice dripping with audacity and a wicked glint in her eye.
Troy’s face darkened, but with students streaming past the school gates, he refrained from laying a hand on her. “Get in the car!”
Ken was still suspended, and Lenore figured a visit to the Duncan family might not be the worst idea. She narrowed her eyes and pulled open the rear door. She was about to climb in when spotting the familiar Porsche Cayenne a few yards
away.
Meeting the deep gaze of the man inside, she raised an eyebrow, a wicked smile tugging at her lips as she slid into Troy’s car.
Watching Lenore’s Mercedes–Benz disappear down the street, Chuck paused and asked the man in the back seat, “Mr. Faulkner, should we follow?”
Before Silas could answer, Wayne gave him a look that said, “You idiot.” He thought Silas smitten with Lenore, something only Chuck seemed to miss.

At the Duncan residence, in the study, Lloyd sat behind his desk, with Carlos standing before him, head bowed.
“Grandpa!” Carlos squirmed, wanting to stand up straight but not daring to, complaining, “That country bumpkin provoked me and hit me in front of everyone. It’s a slap in the face to the Duncan family. She’s from a small town, treating the Duncan family like dirt…”
“Silence!” Lloyd slammed his cane on the table, the sound echoing as he glared darkly.
“I’ve ignored your antics before, but now you’re drinking and racing, causing accidents in the city… Using the Duncan family name to get a man suspended. Do you think I don’t know what you’ve been up to?”
“Grandpa… Carlos wasn’t afraid, sitting on the floor and pouting. “But we’ve always handled things like this before, and it’s been fine.”
Carlos’s old man kicked the bucket early, leaving him as the sole heir in the Duncan family’s younger generation. Lloyd had always given him a long leash
Back in the day, whenever Carlos stirred up trouble, Lloyd would flash some cash, pull a few strings, and hush things up. But now, things had changed.

Lloyd felt a mix of anger and disappointment. “You’ve crossed someone in Denisville who wields immense power!”
At that moment, a knock on the study door interrupted, and the butler’s voice filtered in. “Mr. Lloyd Duncan, a man named Troy is here to see you, says he’s brought his daughter to apologize to Mr. Carlos Duncan.”
