“Snow, my friend who’s pregnant also booked a package at this postpartum care center. The service is excellent, and they have a group discount for two people right now. It would be perfect for us to go together.”
Amber enthusiastically waved a flyer at me, listing a bunch of benefits of staying at a postpartum care center.
In my previous life, Amber had also tried to persuade me like this.
But I had already chosen a postpartum care center, so I refused.
Hearing this, Amber immediately became agitated.
“I’m doing this for your own good. We women need to take good care of ourselves after giving birth, or we’ll have health problems for life. Besides, I’ve already paid your share. If you don’t go, you’ll have to transfer the money to me.”
At the time, thinking she had good intentions, I went along with it.
Who could have imagined that the so–called group discount was actually a buy–one–get–one–free deal?
I paid for the purchased portion, while she enjoyed the free service.
Moreover, after arriving at the postpartum care center, she received a free VIP service upgrade for introducing a customer.
I spent thousands of dollars, yet received worse service than her.
Thinking about it now, Amber had long planned to take advantage of me.
I happily grabbed her hand:
“I’ve been keeping an eye on this postpartum care center too. They have a buy–one–get–one–free promotion right now, right? I heard that if you introduce a customer, you can get a free VIP service upgrade. If we split the cost, it would be less than $5,000 each. But didn’t Eric say he wanted you to do your postpartum confinement at home? Would he agree to you going to a postpartum care center?”
Amber didn’t expect me to know about the center’s promotion. Her face showed a moment of panic before quickly returning to normal:
“I haven’t told him yet, but with this buy–one–get–one–free promotion, I can go if you pay, right? It’s a win–win situation. At worst, I’ll let you have the VIP upgrade.”
She spoke confidently, but I had already heard from Kevin that Eric had originally planned to have her do her postpartum confinement at
home.
Eric had bought a second–hand BMW to keep up appearances, and was struggling to breathe under the monthly mortgage and car payments. Last time, Amber had guiltily used her secret stash to buy my car. Where would she get the money for a postpartum care center?
“Amber, you know I can’t afford such expensive fees on my own. How about this: let’s both do our postpartum confinement at home instead.
Hearing this, Amber’s face darkened.
“Snow, a woman needs professional care during postpartum confinement. Doing it at home is out of the question.”

“Forget it, you don’t have the fortune to enjoy such things.”
I wanted to say more, but she stormed off in a huff.
