I don’t know if Amber has sensed something lately, but she hasn’t been hovering around me these past couple of days. I’m enjoying the peace and quiet.

“Snow, I heard Amber bought a car from you?”
I got up to pour her a glass of water, nodding in agreement:
“Yes, she said her brother wanted to go on a road trip.”
My mother–in–law looked disapproving as she said:
“We’re all family. If her brother wanted to go on a road trip. You could have just lent her the car. Why talk about money?”
Back when Amber and I had our joint wedding ceremony, it was my mother–in–law who had led the agreement.
Amber is different from me. My husband and I fell in love naturally, while s from matchmaking sessions.

I cleared my throat:
“Mom, to be honest with you, we sold the car because Kevin got transferred to another city for work. I’m pregnant and can’t drive anyway. By the time her brother comes back, we’ll already be in the new city.”
My mother–in–law looked surprised:
“Why the sudden transfer? Did something happen?”
I hung my head, my shoulders trembling:
“It’s my fault for being useless. I can’t go to work while pregnant, and Kevin has to support the family alone. It was manageable before, but Amber often comes to take things from us, and our expenses have been increasing. Kevin works overtime until midnight every day, and he even agreed to the company’s transfer to earn more money for the baby’s formula.”
Hearing this my mother–in–law couldn’t sit still.
The male heirs of the Brown family were precious in her eyes.
How could she let her son suffer like this? Seeing me cry so sadly, she couldn’t say much more.
She only left with a parting comment:
“Your sister–in–law is just used to being frugal. I’ll have a good talk with her later. Don’t be too sad, you’re pregnant after all.”
Then she hurriedly left.
I thought that after my mother–in–law went back, Amber would at least be more restrained. But I didn’t expect her ambitions to grow even bigger.
