Chapter 9
The little nurse’s words hit Julian like a
bolt of lightning.
“Mr. Foster, think carefully. Did Mrs. Foster say anything to you that day? Did she leave anything behind?”
It was as if a switch flipped in his mind. He remembered–vividly–the gift I had given him that night.
I had told him that the gift would be opened in three days.
And now, three days later, everything had changed.
Julian had tried reaching me, but my phone was off, and my messages went unanswered. Instead of returning
immediately, he lied about being on a business trip, delaying his return by three more days.
By then, I was already far away, deeply

rooted in a foreign land.
The memory of the gift I left him haunted him.
In a frantic panic, Julian dashed upstairs, his figure a blur as he rushed to the place that haunted both of us. The little nurse stood frozen, confused, unsure of what to do next. The live chat room, filled with thousands of viewers, erupted in excitement, urging her to follow him.
The nurse hesitated, but once the viewers began showering her with virtual gifts, her determination wavered. She ran after him, camera in hand.
The camera panned to that familiar door- my door. I felt a rush of conflicting emotions, as if I were being pulled back into a memory I had long tried to escape. The door cracked open, revealing the chaos left behind.
I hesitated. I didn’t want to step back into
that life.

Just as I was about to exit the live stream, I heard Julian’s anguished cry pierce through the room.
“Ah-!”
“How is it possible?! How could you do this to me, Audrey?”
The camera zoomed in on Julian, who was kneeling on the floor, his body trembling uncontrollably. In his hands, he clutched two pieces of paper, shaking with every movement.
Those papers were the gift I had left for him.
The camera brought the papers into clear view, and the viewers saw them: the divorce agreement and the abortion. surgery slip.
The nurse zoomed in, giving the audience a closer look.
The divorce agreement was simple, almost brutal in its brevity: “Due to emotional

discord and the husband‘ s infidelity, I am filing for divorce.”
The realization hit the live viewers like a wave. They could finally see the truth. They could see Julian’s true face, exposed for the first time.
And they understood why I left. Why I disappeared.
Julian was no longer the composed, charming man he had once been. He was a shell of himself, completely undone by the truth.
He was panicking.
Totally, utterly panicked.
He faced the camera, his emotions. unraveling, his voice breaking as he screamed my name in desperation.
“Audrey… Audrey! Why did you choose this way to say goodbye to me? Audrey, please, stop playing games and come back… please?”

His words came in frenzied bursts, each one more desperate than the last.
“Is there a misunderstanding? Did I do something wrong? Did I hurt you in some way I didn’t realize? Please, Audrey, come back and let me explain… Let me fix this. Let’s put everything behind us. You promised we would grow old together. Was that a lie?”
He was sobbing now, his elegance, his composure completely shattered. He was no longer the man I once knew–the poised, calculating Julian. His face was contorted, raw, and unrecognizable. And I couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of surprise.
Does he really care this much? Does he truly love me? Does it really have to be me?
I could feel the weight of his pain, but none of it could undo what had already been done. Every word, every tear, only
deepened the chasm between us.

What does it matter that he’s crying and begging for redemption now? His actions had already destroyed everything I once believed.
Julian, you are such a complicated mess. You don’t love me anymore, and yet you‘ re pretending to. Why?
He still didn’t understand. He clung to his confusion, his desperation, as if the truth was something he could still deny. Over and over, he repeated the same words, searching for the answer he already knew deep down, but could never accept.
