Derek crumpled the report in his hands and suddenly collapsed to his knees, desperately trying to piece together the torn photo. As he knelt there, trembling at the sight of my corpse, tears fell from his eyes and splattered onto the fragments of the picture.
“Eva… how could you die? Didn’t you run away? Why did this happen?”
The police, seeing his emotional breakdown, tried to help him, but he gripped one of them tightly, his voice rising in anguish. “Who?! Who killed her? Why? How did my wife die?”
I hovered above, watching as Derek slowly fell apart.
I felt no sympathy for him, only a twisted sense of satisfaction and anticipation.
I couldn’t wait to see his reaction when he discovered that the killer was the woman he adored, Vanessa.
Once released, Derek returned home, where Vanessa rushed up to him, concern etched on her face.
“Darling, are you okay? Why did the police want to see you?”
He looked up at her, dazed, a horrifying thought creeping into his mind but quickly shoved down.
When she leaned in for a kiss, he pulled away, a flicker of irritation flashing in her eyes. “I’m tired. Can you cook tonight?”
Vanessa pouted. “I can’t cook! Let’s just order takeout.”
They soon found themselves eating takeout, but as Derek stared at the food, he felt completely uninterested.
He despised sour flavors, yet everything was drenched in vinegar to suit Vanessa’s tastes.
When he was with me, meals were always ready and waiting at home, made with his preferences in mind, with?none of that sour nonsense.
Suddenly, it struck him that I used to enjoy sour foods, but since being with him, I hadn’t touched a single bite.
The thought of my death killed his appetite entirely.

Noticing his lack of enthusiasm, Vanessa furrowed her brow and asked, “What’s up today? You still haven’t said why the police were after you. Did something happen at work?”
She sounded anxious. After living a luxurious life for so long, she certainly didn’t want to return to a simpler existence.
If there was trouble at the company, she’d need to strategize for herself.
Derek fixed his gaze on Vanessa, then suddenly declared, “The statue you gave me is
missing.
She froze, dropping her fork with a clatter.
Recovering quickly, she forced a smile, though guilt flickered in her eyes. “Oh, is that what this is about? I thought something serious happened. If it’s lost, I’ll just get you another one.”
“Vanessa, do you know who made that statue?”
She picked up her fon felgning indiference. ‘No idea I just bought it somewhere, What a the
big deck?
Derek scrutinized her, noting how effortlessly she wore her innocent facade, looking as pure
as ever.
He sighed, feeling a pang of regret for ever doubting her.
He knew exactly what kind of person Vanessa was.
She was like a fairy, so delicate that the sight of someone slaughtering a fish would make her
turn pale.
Derek held her tightly, as if she were his only lifeline.
Vanessa, Eva is dead.”
Vanessa stiffened, her expression shifting in an instant. She had already tensed up when he mentioned the missing statue.
As I watched her face drain of color, I couldn’t help but wish for a moment that Derek would
turn to see her true reaction.
