My mother–in–law, visibly annoyed, dragged Nicole back inside.
“Who told you to run your mouth? Go back to your room and study!” She scolded her.
After shutting Nicole in her room, she returned, smiling apologetically. “Camille, Nicole is young and doesn’t understand. Don’t take her words to heart.”
“Hmph. If I’d known she was so ungrateful, I’d never have taken care of her in the first place.” I harrumphed coldly.
“I’ll talk to her. I’ll make sure she
apologizes properly! We can’t have this kind of attitude towards family,” she anxiously said.
“No need. Empty apologies mean nothing to me,” I replied indifferently. “Henry, if you’re not going to sign the divorce papers, then we’ll go through the courts.”

I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm.
“You just got home–where are you planning to go now?” He frowned.
I smirked. “Didn’t you notice that all my belongings are gone? Guess it really doesn’t matter to you; my things
vanished, and you didn’t even notice. Henry, you‘ ve disappointed me more than I thought possible.”
I shook off his hand and started to walk away. He followed me, pleading.
“Camille, can’t we just sit down and talk?”
Just then, Mallory walked in, glaring at me. “Camille, you still know how to come back, huh? Is this how a wife behaves, leaving her husband and in–laws alone at home while she goes gallivanting around? If this were the old days, they would have tossed you in a river for this!”
Without hesitation, I slapped her hard across the face, drawing blood from her lip.

“And who are you to lecture me? As flawed as I may be, I’d never chase after another woman’s husband and go on vacation with him!” I growled.
“Camille, how dare you hit me?” she whimpered, turning to Henry with tears in her eyes. “Henry, are you really going to stand there and let her hit me?”
“He’s in no position to do anything,” I said coolly. “Actually, since you’re here, why don’t you persuade him to sign the divorce papers? I’d rather not waste time going to court. We’re going to end this one way or another. Delaying it only makes him look even more pitiful.”
As I walked away, I heard Mallory shout, “If she wants to leave, let her go! Why are you even hesitating? Didn’t you say you couldn’t stand her? Then why won’t you end it?”
“You don’t understand, Mallory,” he
replied. “I may not like Camille, but divorce isn’t that simple.”

The two of them continued bickering, their voices fading as I left, uninterested.
Three days later, Henry showed up at my office holding a massive bouquet of roses.
“Wife!” He hurried toward me, beaming as he thrust the flowers in my face.
“Come home, please? Nicole and my · parents miss you so much.”
I eyed the large bouquet and clicked my tongue. “Those must have been expensive.”
“They were,” he admitted, “but you’re worth every penny.”
I sneered. “Henry, we‘ ve been together for nearly six years, and this is the first time you’ve ever given me flowers. I used to hope you’d bring me a bouquet like this, but you never did. What’s the point of giving them to me now? I don’t want them.”

“I know you’re upset that I took Mallory on vacation and made you take the train. I was thoughtless, truly. I made a mistake—give me a chance to make it up to you! I won’t bring Mallory around anymore, and I’ll stop seeing her if it bothers you. Camille, I can’t lose you!” he anxiously said in one breath.
