“I’ll be back in two months,” I said.
Henry shouted, “Camille, are you crazy? What about Nicole? Who’s going to cook for her, take her to school, and help with her homework? And how much is this extended vacation costing you? Enough! Just buy a ticket and come home!”
“I’m spending my own money. It has nothing to do with you. I’m not coming back until I’ve had enough,” I deadpanned.
“And what about Nicole? Are you just going to abandon her?”
“I’m her sister–in–law, not her mother! I’m not obligated to take care of her. Besides, she’s always complaining that I‘. m too controlling. Isn’t perfect?—I won’t take care of her anymore.”
He was fuming. “You‘ ve got one day. If you’re not back by this time tomorrow,

we’re getting divorced!”
I laughed. “Fantastic! Let’s do it–I was hoping you’d finally bring it up.”
“Fine! If we don’t get divorced, I’m a fool!” Henry declared.
“Great. I’ve already sent you the divorce agreement; it should be in your mailbox. Why don’t you check?” I urged.
Henry immediately opened the door to check, finding the divorce papers in the mailbox.
“Camille, you‘ re serious about this?” he asked, his tone was laced with hesitation.
“Of course. Did you think I was just joking?” I chuckled.
He was dumbstruck, silent for a moment.
“Camille, it was just a hard–seat train ride! You‘ re seriously divorcing me over this? I know you just want me to make it up to you. You‘ re pretending to be on vacation, not coming home, so I’ll come after you

and apologize, right? And I haven’t even asked you to pay for all the luggage you lost. Don’t push it! If you still want to be with me, just come back!”
“Henry, are you even listening to yourself? I’m telling you, I want a divorce! Sign the papers. The house is mine, I bought it before we got married. I’m giving you two months to find a place and move out. If I get back and you and your family are still squatting here, I’ll throw you all out myself,” I snapped..
“Camille, stop this nonsense, or I’m really going to lose my temper!” Henry shouted in annoyance.
“Good, get angry! Now sign the papers, and we’ll be done.” I hung up, immediately then removed my SIM card, and put in a new number.
Since he couldn’t reach me, Henry started harassing my family and friends. I told them not to pay him any attention, as I was determined to follow through with the

divorce.
After two more months of travel, I finally returned home. When I opened the door, I wasn’t surprised to find his entire family was still there.
As soon as she saw me, my mother–in–law came running over. “Oh, Camille, you‘ re back! You must be tired after all that traveling. Have you eaten? Are you hungry? I’ll cook you some food.”
This new display of kindness from her made my skin crawl.
“Auntie, there’s no need,” I replied indifferently
She looked at me, startled. “What are you calling me? I’m your mom!”
“Actually, I’m divorced from Henry now, so it’s fine if I call you ‘Auntie,‘ ” I
answered.
Her face dropped, and she quickly turned to look at Henry. He reluctantly stepped

forward.
“Come on, Camille, stop throwing a tantrum. Look how much mom cares for
you. You‘ re really going to throw away a perfectly good marriage over this?” he remarked in disbelief.
“Didn’t you say you wanted a divorce?
And who was it that said whoever doesn’t
go through with it is a fool? Have you signed the divorce agreement?” I clapped back.
Henry pressed his lips together, grabbing my hand with a sigh. “Let’s not fight anymore. You lost our luggage, and then you were gone for so long. I didn’t even bring it up. Let’s drop the talk of divorce, okay? I treat you so well, don’t I? Isn’t that enough proof of how much I cherish you?”
