I didn’t even want to look at him. I shut the door without a word.
Ayden had barely left when I received a call from the police station.
They told me they’d found the necklace and asked me to come claim it.
However, Laverne had been in a car accident while looking for it and was now in surgery at the hospital.
After hanging up, I sat silently on the sofa for a couple of minutes, then went downstairs to Hail a cab to the hospital.
When I arrived at the hospital room, I found Ayden’s parents there too.
Laverne was sobbing uncontrollably, her shoulders shaking as she cried.
“Ayden is such a good person, but now he’s being abandoned by Patricia because of me. I
don’t deserve to live!”
She tore the IV needle from her hand, jumped barefoot out of bed, and started running
toward the wall.
Ayden quickly caught her.
When he saw me, he scowled and tossed the necklace onto the table in my direction, his
voice dark and low. “Here’s your necklace, safe and sound. Laverne nearly lost her life over this.
Now that things have come to this, are you satisfied?”
I held the diamond necklace, feeling its weight in my hand without saying a word.
Ayden’s mother, Serena Hobbes, who had never liked me, didn’t side with me now either.
She stormed over, pointing a finger in my face. “And you have the nerve to ask for a divorce?
Making such a fuss over a worthless necklace, even dragging the police into it. It’s shameful!”
Turning to Ayden, she added, “You should divorce her! If it weren’t for you, she’d be a lazy, good–for–nothing beggar by now.”
Even Ayden’s father, Fernando Hobbes, gave a dismissive snort.
“Mr. Dominguez did us a great kindness. Taking care of Laverne is the least we can do. You’re
so eaten up with jealousy that you see everything as filthy. If something had happened to
Laverne today, I’d never forgive you!”
I glanced at Ayden, who looked just as outraged and slowly clenched my fists.
They acted as if they were the ones suffering a great injustice.
At this point, I had nothing left to say.
Only I knew that their precious, supposedly pure–hearted Laverne was anything but.
They really thought she’d come back just for a job.
But I knew the truth was far from that.
With a cold expression, I threw the diamond necklace to the floor. It shattered, glass beads
scattering everywhere.
Then, I took out my phone and played the recording.
