He kept his tone as gentle as ever. Callie, you just got into a car accident. You still need someone to take care of you. Can we talk about this after youre discharged?”

His eyes were full of warmth, so tender that it felt like they could melt

I locked eyes with him, and he didn’t look away. His gaze was steady, openly affectionate

When I stayed silent, he got up and carefully wiped my face and hands with a warm towel like I was something priceless

treasure

He even checked the water temperature as if he was afraid I might get burned

He also kept an eye on the IV drip, calling the nurse as soon as it was close to running

out

caught the nurse’s attention. When she came in to check on me, she couldn’t help but say, Aww, your boyfriend is so sweet to you.”

Robins lips curled into a smile, visibly pleased

His expression was sweet, dripping with happiness. Of course. Who else would I treat this well if not her?”

But I corrected, He’s not my boyfriend.”

My cold words broke through the mood, echoing through the hospital room

And then, silence fell

The nurse glanced between the two of us, clearly caught off guard

Robins smile froze for a second, but he quickly covered it up. She’s just joking,he explained, laughing it off

I really couldn’t understand him

At school, around friends, he’d go out of his way to distance himself from me like he didn’t like me

But now, with strangers, he was desperate. to make it clear I was his

Suddenly, the phone on the bedside table. buzzed, and Robin let out a quiet sigh like he was relieved from the distraction

He didn’t reach for the phone, though. Instead, he stayed focused on adjusting my blankets and checking the IV

It wasn’t until the phone buzzed a few more times that he finally picked it up, glancing at the screen

That one glance at the message made him hesitate subtly

He avoided looking at me, but when he noticed my gaze, he quickly put the phone back down, pretending nothing had happened

Go ahead and answer it.”

It’s nothing.”

He shook his head, giving me a smile that was more forced than genuine

But before he could say more, the phone buzzed again. This time, he hit the decline button. A moment later, the name

[Caitline] flashed on the screen as it buzzed again

The cycle repeated a few times before Robin finally broke the tension. It’s

probably my bosssomething urgent at work”

Sure,I cut in coldly

He seemed to deflate at my lack of reaction, opening his mouth as if to say something more, then closing it again

Eventually, he stood up and left to take the call, mumbling an excuse on his way out. Theyre short on staff and need me to help out.”

I raised an eyebrow, watching him. Wow

even now, he was lying

But I didn’t have the energy to call him out on it. He could keep pretending for all I cared

Just as he reached the door, I blurted out, It’s Caitline, isn’t it? You don’t have to hide it next time. Just tell me the truth. We’re already broken up, remember?”

His whole body stiffened. When he turned back to face me, his voice sounded strained. Don’t say stuff like that, Callie. She just needed my help with something. I’ll be back soon.”

And with that, he left, practically running out the door like he couldn’t handle hearing anything else I might say

I let out a bitter laugh, turning to the nurse to ask when I could be discharged

The doctor said I had multiple fractures but no other serious complications. A few more days of rest, and I’d be able to leave, though I’d still need time to fully recover
