Chapter 10
Robin found out soon enough. He stopped. me outside my apartment, looking desperate.
“Callie, please don‘ t leave. I know I screwed up. Caitline’s in jail now–can’t we just start over?”
His body was trembling, his fear written all over him.
Fear of losing me.
Fear of me walking away.
Fear of us being over for good.
I crossed my arms, looking at him with a frown.
“My plan to leave is none of your
business. What gives you the right to stop me? You think you‘ re the same Robin I used to know?”
“What are you talking about?”

“Summer. 2012. We met.”
It hit him like a slap. His face went pale, his eyes turned red, and his hands wouldn’t stop shaking. He tried to say something but couldn’t get the words out.
Not long after, a post blew up on the school forum.
[Gold Digger Plans to Study in New Zealand -The Real Story Unveiled!]
I saw it pop up while scrolling, but it was taken down seconds later.
I couldn’t help but chuckle at the wasted effort.
Seconds later, a message from Robin came through. It was a screenshot of Caitline‘ s withdrawal application.
I skimmed through it and raised an eyebrow. And then, I just shook my head.
I didn’t bother with the drama. I focused on packing for my flight.

Chapter 10
The night before I left, Robin showed up again. His expression was filled with guilt like he’d just pieced together some important puzzle.
“Callie,” he began, his voice shaky, “that Christmas, on Westfield Southcenter… you were selling things there, weren’t you?”
“I was.
“So… you knew? All along?”
He froze, his face crumpled, and he covered it with his hands as tears started falling.
“I’m
m so sorry,” he choked out.
It stung a little to hurt him once or twice.
I stared at him coldly, the same way he had looked down on me back then.
But even with the tables turned, I didn‘ t feel the satisfaction I thought I would.
While I was studying in New Zealand, Robin showed up more than once.

Sometimes, I’d catch a glimpse of him on
my way to class, but before I could react, he‘ d vanish again.
Now and then, my bank account would randomly light up with a big deposit from him.
I never checked where it came from, and I didn’t think too much about it.
To me, Robin was just a stranger now- someone familiar, but distant.
No matter how much he tried or how much he gave, I wasn’t going to be moved
anymore.
One time, my old roommate brought up Caitline.
She told me Caitline did face consequences for pushing me that day.
Robin found the evidence himself and got Caitline sent to jail.
But doing that ruined the relationship between their families.

Now, the Greenbergs and the
Goldsboroughs were locked in a messy feud, with neither side willing to back down.
Three years later, I came back to
Washington after studying in New Zealand.
The second I stepped onto familiar ground, I felt this rare sense of calm.
I took a deep breath and was about to walk off when someone familiar blocked my way.
“Callie,” Robin said softly, “welcome back.”
“If you‘ d stop haunting me like a ghost, I’d be even happier,” I replied flatly. My story with Robin? A closed chapter. But my story? That was just the beginning.
The world is vast, and I’ve learned that loving yourself is the first step to being loved.
