Chapter 7
Being with Jake was indeed comfortable. I didn’t need to think much.
If I wanted to eat something, I only needed to tell him my preferences, and he would choose the most suitable restaurant.
If I wanted to go shopping somewhere, I just had to listen to his introduction of the local cultural features, and then we would
head straight to the destination.
Plus, he was very attentive. Before we went shopping, he noticed I was wearing high heels and quietly bought me a pair of
perfectly fitting sneakers with just the right amount of cushioning.
When I changed into the sneakers, Jeff
teased him, “Do you have to be so thoughtful?”
He just smiled faintly and said nothing.
We had fun until late at night, and only

after that did he take us back.
Fortunately, when I got back, I didn’t see Connor again, which would have ruined my good mood.
That night, I even dreamed of Jake carefully protecting me while we were shopping.
However, when I woke up, I pushed those thoughts aside.
I knew that I was only feeling this way because of Connor’s influence.
Over the eight years, at least six of them were spent not being cherished. Over time, I became desperate to grasp a bit of warmth to prove that I deserved to be loved.
But I was inherently worthy of love, so why should I let this small shadow distort my
emotions?
I yawned and habitually picked up my phone, finding that the social media app

needed to be logged in again due to an update.
I habitually entered my information to log in, and it wasn’t until I saw the screen full of red numbers that I realized I had logged into my old account.
The profile picture of the person who couldn’t be bothered to send me a single
message in a month now showed 99+ notifications.
I immediately long–pressed to delete it, not wanting to see any of it.
Scrolling down, I saw messages from Eloise, over 20 of them.
After some thought, I decided to open them.
Eloise thought I was upset about the last time we had dinner and was blaming herself profusely, apologizing non–stop.
I smiled and replied that I wasn’t angry, I had just switched to a new social media

account.
After thinking about it, I gave her my new account information.
Continuing to scroll down, I saw messages about Katie.
[Katie is really something else. She drove away the two clients you worked so hard to secure.]
[Our new manager had a fight with her, and she was crying and complaining to Connor. She’s shameless.]
I pressed my lips together. Katie was truly spoiled by Connor, extending her reach even into the business department. If she kept this up, the company would be doomed.
[Hahaha, Katie, relying on Connor’s support, is acting up everywhere. She got scolded, didn’t she? Instant karma.]
Attached was a video.
I clicked on it and saw Katie crying as she

ran out of the CEO’s office.
Connor didn’t chase after her, which was unexpected given how much he cared about her before.
I exited Eloise’s chat and saw messages
from the HR manager.
Opening them, I found a barrage of complaints.
He asked what I was doing, why I disappeared after resigning, and how it got him scolded by Connor.
He complained that it wasn’t his fault. Connor had signed the papers to let me go, and now he was caught in the crossfire.
Later, he begged me to come back, saying that without me, Connor was irritable, and they couldn’t bear the low morale.
Finally, he messaged: [Tara, you’re not replying to my messages. At least give me a sign.]
Amused, I sent him a sign, logged out, and

switched to my new account.
Eloise’s friend request came quickly, and after accepting it, I chatted with her for a while.
I told her not to share my account information with anyone else, and then I received an invitation from Jake to a dinner party.
The dinner party was expected. Whenever a big company had major news, they would either arrange a banquet or a press
conference. It was a common occurrence.
I picked out my favorite off–shoulder evening gown from the closet and
scheduled an at–home stylist.
