Chapter 13 – Fool Me Twice
FREYA
I woke up to the gentle touch of Sarah‘ s hand resting on my arm. I blinked, my heart tightening as I took in her frail figure. She looked more sickly, her skin pale and her eyes
sunken.
“Freya,” she whispered, her voice barely
audible.
“I’m here, Sarah,” I replied, my heart aching at the sight of her.
I had spent the night in this room, holding vigil for the woman who had become like a second grandmother to me.

Just then, the doctor entered, his expression serious yet hopeful.
“Good morning, Freya. Sarah,” he said, nodding at us. “I have some news. An
anonymous person sent an antidote to the hospital. We tested it, and it’s been confirmed to treat the poison in Sarah’s system.”
My heart leaped at the words, a glimmer of hope igniting within me.
“Really? That’s amazing!” I exclaimed, unable to contain my relief.
The doctor smiled, but it was tempered by urgency. “I need to administer it right away. If you could wait outside for a few minutes?”
“Of course,” I said, stepping back as he

prepared the treatment. I felt a whirlwind of emotions–hope, fear, and a desperate wish for Sarah to get better.
I paced the hallway, glancing at the clock. Each tick felt like a lifetime.
Finally, a few minutes later, the doctor emerged from the room, his expression now brighter. “It worked, Freya! The antidote is effective. Sarah is responding well.”
I felt tears of joy spring to my eyes. “Really? Can I see her?”
“Yes, go ahead,” he encouraged with a smile on his face.
I rushed back into the room, my heart pounding with anticipation. Sarah was sitting up slightly, a hint of color returning to her

cheeks.
“Freya!” she exclaimed, her voice stronger than before. “You stayed.”
“Of course, I stayed,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “I couldn’t leave you.”
She reached out, and I took her hand, feeling the warmth return to her grip. “Thank you, dear.”
Tears streamed down my face as I squeezed her hand. “I’m just so glad you’re okay, Sarah. I was so scared.”
“I know,” she said gently, wiping a tear from my cheek. “But you were here. That’s what matters.”
I needed to tell Roy the good news. He

hadn’t been responding to my calls since he left yesterday, and I was worried about him.
“I’ll be right back, Sarah. I need to go find Roy,” I said, giving her one last squeeze.
“Tell him I’m better,” she replied, her eyes sparkling with relief.
I hurried to Roy‘ s house, my heart racing with anticipation.
When I arrived, the door creaked as I opened it, and I called out, “Roy? Are you
“Roy? Are you home?”
Silence greeted me, and I felt a sense of unease. I walked through the living room.
“Roy?” I called again, a little louder this
time.
As I approached his bedroom, I noticed the

door was slightly ajar. I pushed it open, and
my heart dropped at the sight before me. There was Roy, asleep in bed, his arms wrapped around Raina.
What? I felt like the wind had been knocked
out of me. The image was seared into my mind, and I stood frozen at the doorway, my heart racing with confusion and betrayal.
“Freya,” Raina said, her voice dripping with false sweetness as she stirred, noticing me.
“What… what is this?” I managed to say, my voice low and trembling with hurt.
Roy stirred awake, his eyes blinking in surprise. “Freya?” he said, his voice thick with sleep.
“Really?” I shot back, my heart aching with

pain. “You‘ re in bed with her?”
“Freya, it’s not –,” he started, but I cut
him off.
“You‘ re literally in bed with her!” I echoed, my voice rising.
“Please, let me explain,” he pleaded, sitting up and pushing Raina away.
“No! I don’t want to hear it!” I felt tears welling up, the betrayal cutting deeper than I could have imagined. “I can’t believe you’d do this to me, especially after everything we’ve been through!”
“Freya, please,” he said again, desperation in his eyes.
“Your grandmother is okay!” I blurted out,

my emotions spilling over. “She’s getting better. I thought you’d want to know!”
Raina smirked, clearly enjoying the chaos unfolding. “Oh, how sweet,” she said mockingly. “You played the good fiancée
while he’s here with me.

I glared at her, anger flaring inside me. “Shut up. You‘ re the last person I want to hear from right now.”
I turned and fled from the room, my heart pounding in my chest. I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of betrayal and hurt.
As I rushed out of the house, I could hear Roy calling my name, but I didn’t stop. I needed to escape, to find a place where I could
breathe again.
The weight of everything crashed down on me, and tears streamed down my face as I stumbled away from the house. I felt lost, broken, and utterly alone.
