Love has drifted away Ch 9
Chapter 9

Yet Charles’s eyes remained vacant, as if he couldn’t see.

He seemed intent on beating him to death.

Sophia cried out, “Charles, there’s only five minutes left on the bomb! Help me first!”

Charles snapped back to reality and went to disarm the bomb on Sophia.

David sat up, gripping a remote, a bloody smile on his face.

“Let’s go down together.”

At this critical moment, police rushed in and shot David.

Others hurried to help Sophia with the bomb.

Even after disarming it, the timer kept ticking. Sophia sprinted out of the warehouse, terrified of being caught in the blast.

Ethan grabbed Charles. “Charles, let’s go! There’s only three minutes left!”

Most people quickly evacuated, but Charles stood motionless, staring at the bomb.

Ethan gritted his teeth, dragging Charles out of the warehouse.

The next second, the bomb exploded.

The blast was as powerful as David claimed, leveling the warehouse.

In the last moment, Ethan shielded Charles, got injured, and was rushed to the hospital.

Charles stood up unharmed.

Seeing this, Sophia rushed over and hugged Charles. “Brother, I understood your intentions inside. I swore if I survived, we’d get married!”

The truth was revealed, and the murderer who killed me was dead.

I thought I could escape Charles.

But I found myself still by his side, unable to leave.

I broke down, wondering why fate was so unfair, still not setting me free.

After the case was solved, Charles and Ethan were awarded commendations for their bravery.

Sophia eagerly dragged Charles to meet her parents.

She endlessly recounted how Charles saved her and insisted on marrying him.

Yet Charles seemed detached, silent, as if existing outside this world.

After the case concluded, my parents went to the police station to claim my body.

Charles watched from a distance in the shadows, so I could see too.

I saw my mom sobbing quietly, shoulders shaking.

And my dad, putting on a brave face, comforting her.

A month later, it was my funeral.

Charles still attended.

Dressed in a black suit, he stood far at the back.

Emily was eager to introduce Charles to her parents. She would enthusiastically recount how Charles had rescued her, declaring that she wanted to dedicate her life to him.

Yet, Charles remained aloof and silent, as if he were detached from the world around him.

After the incident concluded, my parents went to the police station to retrieve my remains. From a distance, Charles observed from the shadows, allowing me to see him as well.

I watched as my mother wept silently, her shoulders trembling. My father tried to appear strong, comforting her.

A month later, my funeral was held. Charles attended. He stood at the back, dressed in a black suit.

When my mother noticed him, her eyes turned red as she approached, pointing at him, “Leave! Get out now!”

“I don’t want to see you at my daughter’s funeral, leave!”

Charles lowered his head, “Uncle, Aunt, I…”

Before he could finish, my mother, unable to restrain herself, slapped him.

Charles didn’t resist, allowing her to hit him. My father held back my emotional mother and looked at Charles.

“Charles, you’ve been awarded a third-class merit. Now you’re a national hero.”

“But you earned it with my daughter’s life!”

“Leave now. My daughter wouldn’t want to see you.”

“You are the one who caused her death!”

Hearing those words, Charles seemed to snap back to reality, a tear slipping from his eye.

Charles suddenly fell to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably. The numbness from before was shattered by those words.

“Uncle, Aunt, I was wrong.”

“I love Grace, and I wish she could return, even if it meant sacrificing my life.”

“What good is this merit? I only want Grace!”
