Chapter 4
On the first day I left Henley Group, the news of Darren’s resurrection spread across the entire internet and along with it, his upcoming wedding.
Of course, my parents also found out about such a big event and immediately called to ask me what happened.
I told them everything in detail, but they were even angrier and said they were going to confront Darren.
“No need.” I quickly stopped my parents. “He’s lost his memory now; we can’t blame him.”
I thought, if he had a choice, he wouldn’t
want to lose his memories either. He
wouldn’t want to forget me.
In fact, I could tell from the moment we reunited. He still carried many expressions
and gestures that only appeared when we were together.

There was even a scar on his hand, left unintentionally during one of our playful
moments.

I noticed that he often stared at that scar in a daze.
I didn’t blame him. He just couldn’t remember. But… but why did my heart hurt so much?
I hung up the phone and collapsed weakly. I crouched down as if my back could no longer bear the blow, bending entirely under the weight.
The pain spread through my body from the inside out and I couldn’t hold back the
sobs that escaped me.
Downstairs at the company, pedestrians
came and went, yet no one noticed I was crying in agony.
That was for the best.
The daughter of the Marjorie family, Cindy, couldn’t afford to look this pitiful.

“Cindy?”
A voice suddenly called out to me. I raised my head in confusion, locking eyes with Darren.
He seemed visibly stunned when he saw the state I was in.
In his eyes, I was always someone strong- willed, someone who would never show such a vulnerable expression.
But in the few days since our reunion, I had already felt this sorrow multiple times.
He furrowed his brows and asked, “Are you sad because of me?”
“You‘ re overthinking it,” I replied, standing up and wiping away my tears.
“That’s good,” he said, before pulling out a ring from his pocket. “You forgot to take this.”
The outer side of the ring was engraved with a lily of the valley, something I noticed at the proposal site.

Unfortunately, I only found one.
The other ring must have been taken by Darren.
I silently looked at him, wanting to reach out and take the ring, but Darren suddenly closed his palm.
He stared blankly at his hand, as if lost in thought.
I couldn’t help but wonder, did Darren remember something?
Had he remembered that this ring was designed by the two of us together, or perhaps how much effort he had poured into it and what it symbolized?
All these things were so meaningful to me.
I held my breath, waiting for him, but time passed, longer and longer.
He opened his palm in front of me again. The ring was still in his hand, now slightly warm from his body heat.

“Forget it, I still can’t remember,” he said.
This time, he directly shoved the ring into my hand and walked away without looking back.
This was the third time since our reunion that he had walked away from me, not once turning back.
Returning to the home we used to share, I found that all my belongings were already packed.
I would be moving out tonight.
I looked around at the familiar I one last time and couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sadness.
This place held so much of my effort and dedication.
I clutched the box tightly in my hands and thought about how it also carried ten years of my unspoken love.
Darren might never know that in my heart,

there would always be a place for him.
When I was younger, I didn’t even realize that this was love. I always followed in his
footsteps and in some areas, I even surpassed him.
But I discovered something. I was terrified of him finding out about my feelings for
him.
I loved Darren and it was the biggest secret of my school days. I even wrote him countless love letters, but every time, I either lost them or tore them up myself.
Only one letter remained intact.
It was because, on that day, Darren and Vivie got together.
As I stood there, holding the letter and hesitating whether to give it to him, I saw them by the school lake.
They were kissing.
I hid the letter behind my back, pretending to pass by casually. I even greeted them

with a smile.
I didn’t throw that letter away. Instead, I kept it intact, preserving it completely.

Because every time I saw it, I would remind myself just how laughable my love
was.
If it weren’t for that drunken night, I
think Darren and I would never have crossed paths again.
After that, I developed a habit; collecting everything related to him.
I locked all the evidence of our so–called love in this big box. My love was buried for ten years.
I rubbed my eyes and loaded everything into the car.
I looked back at this place one last time and found that my emotions were much calmer than they had been in recent days.
Goodbye, our so–called love nest.

Perhaps by tomorrow, it will welcome its new owners. The ones it truly belonged to, the ones it truly loved.
A place where two people truly love each other could be called a love nest. As for me,
at best, I was just a dove occupying a magpie’s nest.
The final outcome could only be one of being driven out, chased and ridiculed by the world.
