“It’s okay. I’ll be fine after some time.”
Besides, now that I was pregnant, I couldn’t just take medicine casually.
“Why? It’s not like I can’t afford painkillers. Wait a moment.”
Just as Kevin was about to leave, his phone rang
He glanced at the caller ID and immediately answered, “Kevin, I have a fever. Can you take me to the hospital?” She said softly through her sobs, sounding pitiful.
“Where are you now?” Kevin’s voice sounded urgent. He was worried something might happen to Amelia.
Im at home. It’s late, so please let Maria know before you come over. I don’t want her to misunderstand”
“No need.” Kevin glanced at me several times before he continued, “I don’t need to report to her about what I do.”
After hanging up, he didn’t even look at me as he prepared to leave.
“Kevin, I called out to him.
He stopped, sounding impatient, ‘Maria, Amelia has a fever, and it’s serious. You’ve got your old issues. A little delay won’t kill you. Don’t make a big deal about it.” So, a fever was a serious issue, and my pain was no big deal.
I endured the pain and pointed to the keys on the table. “Don’t forget the keys.
He paused for a moment, picked up the keys, glanced at me, and said, “I’ll buy your medicine after I make sure Amelia is fine.”
I’didn’t say anything, watching his departing figure.
I waited at home for a long time, but Kevin didn’t return.
When the pain became unbearable, I consulted a doctor who advised against taking ibuprofen due to my unstable pregnancy and recommended I come to the hospital to have a check–up: l’agreed and called an ambulance. As I was about to put my phone away, I saw Amelia’s post on Instagram.
“No matter what happens, you’re always there for me. Thank you.”
The picture attached was of a man handling registration procedures at a hospital.
She clearly was showing off Kevin’s attentiveness.
There were some comments below.
“My gosh! Isn’t this the guy who sent you roses last time?”
“Did you really win him over?”
“Tell me. Is he great in bed?
Amelia replied with a shy–faced emoji.
She neither confirmed nor clarified, leaving room for speculation.
A few minutes later, Amelia sent me a video of Kevin getting her medicine, his eyes full of concern, asking her to listen to the doctor’s instructions. She said, “Maria, don’t worry. We really are at the hospital.”
Iknew what was on her mind right away
Iturned off my phone screen, my heart inexplicably aching.
I still remembered six months ago, when I felt unwell and wanted Kevin to accompany me to the hospital.
He said, “Maria, I’m not a doctor Don’t call me for everything.”
*Do you know how valuable my time is? A minute could mean a deal worth millions of dollars. Keep the minor issues to yourself.
Later, I dragged my weak body to the hospital alone and ran into his friend.
Maria, why are you at the hospital alone? Didn’t Kevin come with you?”
Inodded and said, “He’s busy and didn’t have the time.”
“That makes sense. I just saw him with Amelia speing an obstetrician. He really is busy.”
My heart sank, and I made an excuse to leave, but he stopped me. “Why the rush? Since we’ve met, let’s have dinner together.”
Sorry, I’m not feeling well. I’ll invite you to dinner with Kevin another day.”
He scoffed, “I thought you two had broken up long ago.”
I’stared at him, a fit of anger surging through my heart. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards the fire escape, saying, “Do you know what Kevin said about you last time he saw me?” “He said you were bad in bed and told me to ‘train you well.”
