Whatever had hit Nick, it was enough to leave him bedridden for days. His absence spared me any more of his dramatics, allowing Julian and me to focus on wedding plans, which kept me plenty busy.
Then one day, Ella came to see me, falling to her knees the moment she arrived, tears streaming down her face. “Please, Ms. Jensen, could you check on Nick?”
I sidestepped, nearly tripping as she reached for my dress.
“Ms. Jensen,
he’s so sick. He’s not waking up. In his sleep, he keeps calling for you.”
Hearing Ella’s voice was a rare occurrence. I looked down at her without a hint of interest.
“Ms. Jensen, you’ve known Nick since childhood. Just visit him, please!” She began wailing louder, “I was too ambitious! If you agree, I’ll step aside! Please, I’m begging you!”
As I considered this strange scene, Rachel’s voice rang out sharply, “Who let you in here? This isn’t a place where any stray cat or dog can barge in.”

At first, I thought it was an insignificant incident. But the more I thought about her words, the stranger they seemed. Nick was sick, calling for me? That didn’t fit him. And that strange mention of him dreaming about our wedding. Could he have returned to the past, just as I had?
The fact that I’d been given a second chance already seemed unreal. But if he did remember, where would that leave my third move?
