I was merely a bystander.
It would be a lie to say I didn’t hurt.
At that moment, I wondered if Sheldon still
remembered when we lived in the
basement.
He had made me a rather ugly birthday cake with his own hands, held me in his arms and softly promised.
“Nora, when I have money in the future, I’ll throw you a grand birthday party every year!”
As life got better for us, my birthdays were gradually overshadowed by his endless business engagements.
Did our promises when we were young just fly away like dandelions fluff?
They were so light they vanished with a single spring breeze.

Sheldon hid the roses behind him.
When I stepped through the door, he stubbornly insisted.
“Then what do you like? I’ll give you anything you want.”
“I’ve rented a place nearby. If you need anything, just call me.”
“I’ll be staying here until you’re ready to go
back home with me.”
I shut the door, shutting out Sheldon’s
voice.
Finally, it was quiet.
My mother had just finished making
dinner and asked cautiously.
“Nora, is that Sheldon again?”
“You two were together for eight years. If
you really can’t let it go…

Dad snorted in disapproval, setting his teacup down on the table.

“What’s there to hold on to, Nora? We don’t go back to old flames!”
I smiled wryly, patiently explaining.
“Alright, Mom and Dad, don’t worry. Precisely because we were together for eight years, I’ve given this breakup a lot of thought.”
“I’m not interested in anything else right now. I just want to focus on work.”
I’ve always known I was stubborn to the
core.
Falling for Sheldon was like a moth drawn to a flame, unstoppable and unyielding.
I had no regrets about the impulsive choices I made as a youth.
And I had none now about leaving him.
I’ve been abroad for over half a month and
he had been following me like a shadow.
He was trying to win me back by buying coffee every day for my new coworkers.

As a result, whenever his car appeared downstairs, my colleagues would wink and nudge me.
“Miss Nora, your admirer is here again!”
I’d give a perfunctory smile, not taking it seriously.
No one liked to be constantly rejected.
I thought to myself, maybe with time, Sheldon would eventually give up.
Day after day, just when I thought life would go on as uneventful as ever.
Something unexpected happened.
My mother, who had a history of heart problems, ran out of her medication today.
I had been swamped with work recently, so my parents didn’t want to burden me and hadn’t mentioned it.
But in the middle of the night, my mother suffered a severe heart attack.
The nearest hospital was a fifteen–minute

drive away and it was nearly impossible to find a taxi at that hour.
My father and I were in a panic, sweating
bullets.
At my wit’s end, I thought of Sheldon.
My mother’s health was the top priority, so I took a deep breath and called him.
But his phone showed he was on another call and when I tried again, it was switched off.
I had no idea how long I waited by the roadside.
Thankfully, a kind passerby helped us get my mother to the hospital. It was a close call.
Worried about my mother’s condition, I took a few days off work.
I stayed in the hospital and took turns with my father to take care of my mother.
It wasn’t until three days later that I saw
