He held a fruit basket and his face looked
exhausted.
“How is your mother, Nora?”
“I’m so sorry. I missed your call that day because I had an urgent matter back home

Sheldon had returned in a hurry and he‘ d rushed here as well.
I had a vague sense of what it might be and asked casually.
“What kind of urgent matter?”
A flicker of hesitation crossed Sheldon‘ s face. After a brief silence, he admitted.
“Winter called me, saying she’d been in a car accident and got badly injured.”
“I was worried she couldn’t handle it alone. So, I flew back home.”

“But when I found her, I realized she was perfectly fine–just a small scratch on her hand.”
I sighed deeply and looked up at Sheldon.
“I called you that night because my mother had a heart attack.”
Sheldon’s eyes met mine as he mumbled.
“Nora, I … I didn’t know. I’m truly sorry.”
After saying that, he suddenly took my hand and gathered his courage.
“But don’t worry. I’ve already fired Winter.”
“It was her fault for lying to me. While I was away, she even misused company funds under my name.”
“Nora, I’ve also applied for an overseas transfer with the headquarters. It should be approved soon.”
I coldly shook off Sheldon’s hand and calmly replied, “No need. It’s unnecessary.”

Sheldon frowned slightly.
“How is it unnecessary?”
“Isn’t the problem between us all because of Winter?”
“I don’t understand. I’ve cut ties with her. Why can’t we be like we used to?”
A southern breeze couldn’t brave a
northern winter; belated love was as fleeting as fallen leaves.
I cut him off, my voice cold. “Sheldon, it’s never been about Winter between us. I’m
so tired of your coldness, your belittling, your distrust. You’ve built up this perfect fantasy. You only cut ties with Winter because she wasn’t what you imagined. But even if it weren’t her, it would‘ ve been
someone else.”
Sheldon shook his head and desperately
tried to defend himself.
“It won’t happen, Nora …”
Sheldon hesitated, his words faltering

before he finally continued, “Nora, at least let me stay by your side. Okay? I just want to be closer to you. It would be enough to see you every day.”
I exhaled softly through my nose.
“That’s your business. Just don’t disrupt my life or my family‘ s.”
Sheldon seemed to cling to his last shred of hope. He nodded obediently, his tone rising slightly.
“I got it. I’ll be mindful.”
Not long after, Sheldon and I ended up working in the same office space.
I could feel his eyes on me all the time.
Then, I started dating someone new.
Sheldon was visibly shaken, but he had no right to interfere in my life anymore.
You’ve got to keep moving forward, live in the moment and let go of the past.
Even though I had been hurt before, I still

found the courage to love again.
After that, Sheldon pretty much disappeared. I hardly ever saw him around
anymore.
The young man’s passionate vows were as fleeting as the receding tide, lost forever.
When the storms had passed and the waters still, I would raise my voice in
untamed wilds. I would traverse the cosmic dust, seeking my dawn.
