Chapter 7
After eating a midnight snack, I washed up and then sat beside Adrian, ready to accompany him as he slept. He smelled nice, his scent comforting and familiar, easing the tension of the day. His body, while still warm, was no longer as firm as before. Months of being in bed had caused his muscles to shrink, but even so, I still admired his broad shoulders and the strength that lingered in his frame. He was still top–notch, despite everything.
After the events of the day, I felt strangely closer to him. There was a connection I hadn’t anticipated–a closeness that seemed to grow with each passing
moment. He truly cared about me, and that was something I hadn’t felt in a long time. The realization that I was here by his side made me feel secure in a way I hadn’t known before. With no one around, I could be myself, resting beside him, feeling his warmth.

It was easy to talk to him, even though I knew he couldn’t hear me. I filled the silence with thoughts and musings, speaking aloud as though he could respond. There was something soothing about the sound of my own voice in the stillness, something that made the room feel less lonely. As I talked, I felt a surge of emotion, whispering things I had kept hidden for so long. But I knew there was no point in worrying about waking him; after all, he wasn’t aware of anything yet.
As I continued, my body relaxed, my eyelids heavy with sleep. Eventually, I drifted off, my voice tapering off into silence.
The next morning, when I opened my eyes, the sunlight was streaming through the window. Abigail was sitting by the bed, watching us. Her expression was warm, though there was a hint of something unreadable in her eyes. The moment I realized she was there, my face turned beet red. I had been lying so close to Ade

She chuckled softly, noticing my unease.
“Don’t be nervous, Miss Greer. You‘ re Adrian’s wife. What’s wrong with sleeping together?” she said, her voice gentle.
I forced a smile, trying to hide my embarrassment, and quickly sat up. I stood and adjusted my hair and clothes, trying to regain some composure.
Abigail smiled as she caressed Adrian‘ s face, her fingers tender and gentle. Her eyes were slightly bloodshot, clearly from lack of sleep, and I realized that she must have been watching him for hours, hoping for some sign of life. She must have felt as though she were losing him, and I could. see the strain of it in her face.
“I’ll go wash up,” I said quietly, not wanting to intrude further on her moment.
Abigail‘ s voice followed me as I walked.

out. “Miss Greer, I’ve looked into your background. Your childhood was difficult. I want to help you. From now on, I’ll be giving you five hundred thousand dollars a month.”
The words hit me like a wave, and I froze in place. Five hundred thousand dollars? I had never seen so much money in my life. My mind raced with possibilities. What could I do with that kind of wealth?
“Thank you!” I couldn’t hold back my gratitude, accepting her offer without hesitation. Five hundred thousand dollars would change my life, no doubt about it.
Abigail‘ s smile was warm and genuine.
“I’m Abigail Becker, and I really like you as my daughter–in–law. I’ve also cleared your family’s debts. Your parents won’t bother you anymore.
Her words were a balm to my soul. She had gone so far as to investigate my past and clear the debts that had always haunted me. No more sending money to my parents

-no more living in fear of their demands. I could finally breathe.
“Thank you, Abigail,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. I didn’t know how to properly express my gratitude, but I hoped she understood.
“I’ll go wash up,” I said, trying to regain my composure. “You can stay with Adrian.”
Abigail nodded, gently calling out to Adrian as I left the room.
I washed up quickly, my thoughts spinning as I processed everything that had happened. It was all happening so fast, and I wasn’t sure how to keep up. But one thing was certain: my life was changing in ways I hadn‘ t expected.
