Implying he’d be joining us tonight.
He closed his laptop and straightened his collar, looking completely nonchalant.
Ethan’s eyes widened in surprise and he whipped his head around to look.
Watching Ethan’s profile, I felt an inexplicable pang in my heart.
Nathan had always been so busy with work. He clearly hadn’t spent much time with
Ethan before, judging by the boy’s shock.
The impeccably dressed Chloe appeared in my line of sight, arm–in–arm with a man.

“Are you stalking me or something? Did you know I’d be here?” she asked suspiciously.
“Get real, will you? I’m here with my son. Who in their right mind would bother following you around? Narcissist much?” I scoffed.

“Let’s go,
Ethan wants to see the elephants,” Nathan reminded me from a short distance away, holding Ethan.
“So that’s your divorced husband? You really do enjoy raising other people’s kids, huh.”
I looked at her, feeling strangely conflicted. Had people really changed so completely? Or had she always been like this and I just never noticed?
I didn’t respond to her, just turned and walked towards Nathan.
I thought back to our sophomore year of high school, when the three of us went out together. We passed by a family fun center with lots of kids playing inside.
On a whim, we decided to join them.
We played on the trampolines with the little kids.
Teamed up for bumper cars.
And went down those super long slides.
The whole time, she was so protective of the children, gently standing watch nearby. Whenever a kid fell down or got into an argument, she’d rush right over to help.
All the children loved playing with her.
Oh, and I still remember clearly what she said on the way home.
“Amber, Sarah, I love kids so much. But I dont think I want to get married in the future. When you two have kids, can I be their godmother?”
We even made a pact to be each other’s bridesmaids back then.
And now things had turned out like this…

My thoughts were suddenly interrupted. I looked down at Ethan. “What is it, sweetie?”
He paused for a few seconds, then asked curiously:
“Why do babies appear in tummies later?”
I was charmed by his innocent question. “All babies grow inside their mommies‘ tummies before they’re born. Then they slowly get as big as you.”
But it’s not easy to explain this kind of thing to a small child.
“Oh.”
Seeing his serious expression, I had to laugh,
Kids really are too adorable.
When we got home, I saw an unexpected face.
“Why are you back?” I asked in surprise.
Nathan gave me a strange look. “This is my house.”

Oops, I’d forgotten about that.
Ethan happily ran over to him. “Daddy!”
I was a bit surprised to see how naturally Nathan picked him up.
I’d assumed a man like him wouldn’t be good at this kind of thing.
Watching the father and son interact warmly, suddenly felt hungry.
I hadn’t eaten much at the reunion. What a waste.
I silently lamented for a second.
