The first game began. The rules were that the child would take off their shoes, then one parent would carry them from the starting line to a small bench. The child had to put their shoes back on by themselves.

In front of the bench were two hula hoops. The parent had to move them forward one by one for the child to step through. The first team to make it back to the start would win.
Most of the dads were doing this game.
Nathan stood at the starting line holding Ethan, waiting for the referee’s signal.
Ethan’s eyes were shining brightly, a constant smile on his face.
I stood to the side taking photos the whole time to commemorate the event for Ethan.
Nathan and Ethan’s perfect teamwork won them first place.
I participated in the relay race later on.
After the parent–child activities ended, we won first place overall. The prize was a big stuffed animal.
I was so excited that I turned to high five Nathan. “Give me five!”
He surprisingly went along with it. Maybe it was my imagination, but he seemed softer than usual.
I decided the stuffed animal wasn’t as cute as the one Ethan had given me though, sal just handed it to Nathan.
I lazed around at home for the next few days, sometimes dropping Ethan off at preschool before heading to my studio.
One day, I got a message from Sarah.
