Chapter 6 We’re Done
“How is that possible?“Chris instinctively objected, then dismissed the idea with disdain, “Mason, you’ve grown bold, conspiring with Amber to deceive me! ”
There was silence on the other end. After Chris hung up, Mason sent details about the funeral arrangements and the cemetery address.
Upon reading it, Chris froze!
His eyes widened in disbelief as he stared
at me. “Such a big deals, why didn’t you tell me?”
I chuckled, “How could I tell you?”
The night before our trip to Disney, he
turned off his phone and vanished from the
vast company.
I couldn’t find him anywhere.
Mason, unable to bear it any longer,
stepped in and helped me with Aaron’s

funeral arrangements.
Remorse gnawed at him as he recalled his actions. “If you had told me beforehand…”
I cut him off. “Haven’t I told you enough?”
Every time it was Aaron’s birthday, every Children’s Day, every time Aaron was discharged from the ICU.
How desperately he longed to see his
father
Desperate to reach Chris, Aaron tried calling him relentlessly.
At first, he would brush me off with
excuses, promising to visit Aaron soon.
But later, he started ignoring Aaron’s calls altogether, preoccupied with
accompanying Sharon on a reality show.
Aaron, hooked up to a ventilator, would excitedly point at the TV screen, asking, “Is that Dad?”
I glanced at the TV show, unable to bear

telling Aaron he was mistaken.
Since his birth, Aaron had only seen Chris a few times.
He couldn’t even remember what his dad looked like anymore.
A flicker of guilt crossed Chris‘ eyes. “I thought Aaron was just like your mother, using his illness to manipulate me into coming home.”
When my mother was gravely ill, she
noticed Chris‘ constant absences and
would call him, urging him to return home and be with me.
Chris had assumed it was a ploy on her
part.
So, he believed I was using Aaron to guilt him into coming back.
In the beginning, when Aaron’s symptoms first appeared, and the doctors couldn’t pinpoint the cause, I reached out to Chris.

He did return then, but upon seeing the medical documentation, he became convinced I was using Aaron to trick him into coming home.
From then on, no matter how many times I tried to contact him, he refused to believe
- me.
Now, Chris clearly couldn’t believe reality.
“He was fine when I saw him last,” he
insisted.
“Last time? Chris, don’t joke around.”
I laughed until tears almost started flowing. “When did you last see him? Nearly two years ago!”
“He had just started walking back then. Do you even remember what he looked like?”
Chris pressed his lips, unable to retort.
He seemed somewhat remorseful.

murmured, his voice laced with remorse.
I swatted his hand away.
Sorry?
Was that all he had to offer after Aaron’s tragic death?
My gaze pierced into his, searching the face of the man I’d loved for over a decade, desperately trying to decipher the depths of his heart.
“Oh, please.” I pushed him away, my voice laced with icy sarcasm. “We could never afford the weight of an apology from Mr. Walker.”
Chris, seeing the scorn on my face, looked unsettled.
He had a strong suspicion.
He was about to lose me.

He actually thought I wanted compensation.
He thought Aaron’s death could be compensated for with a marriage proposal.
“No need, Chris, we’re done.”
