A month of traveling made me feel so much better.
I felt like I had regained the energy I had when I was younger.
But what I didn’t expect was that, when I got home, I saw people I didn’t want to see.
Curran, Penney, and Alvin were sitting at my doorstep with all their luggage piled up next to
them.
As soon as they saw me, Curran rushed over, eager to grab my hand.
Alvin excitedly threw his arms around my waist.
I calmly pushed him away and stepped back from Curran.
I looked at the three of them, my mind racing.
Alvin looked heartbroken when I pushed him away, his face full of disbelief.
“Mom, why did you push me away?” he asked, voice trembling.
“Don’t call me that. I’m not your mom. Brenda is your mom. Leave me alone. I’m just a bad
woman.”
Alvin went pale and said nothing more.
Penney, smiling, came up to me and grabbed my hand.
“Shirley, I’ve always considered you my daughter. Now that we’re all back, I hope you and
Curran can make up. That way, we can be a family again!”
I shook off her hand, stepping back from her.
I knew exactly why they were here.
After everything that had happened, Curran’s company was on the brink of bankruptcy.
He was in deep debt.
When Brenda found out, she immediately left him that very night.
With nowhere else to go, Curran and his family thought of me.
I couldn’t believe how shameless they were. They had treated me like a maid before, and
now, I had no intention of accepting them back.
- me.
“Get out! I don’t take in garbage!”
I thought they would leave after that, but I had underestimated their shamelessness.
Every day, Curran and Alvin sat by my door. Whenever I went out shopping, they followed
“Shirley, let me help you.”
P
“Mom, I’ll help too!”
These were the kinds of things I had never heard during our marriage. Now that we were divorced, it was like I had become the family’s pampered princess.
Looking at the overly attentive father and son, I eventually relented and let them in.
After all, my neighbors had complained that they were blocking the hallway, so I decided it was easier to let them stay inside.
That night, Curran took my hand, looking sincerely at me.

“Shirley, I know I was wrong. Don’t worry. From now on, you’ll be the princess we all cherish
Alvin tugged at my other hand.
“Mom, when I grow up, I’ll be really good to you!”
I didn’t say a word.
The next morning, I was woken by a loud knock on my door.
“Shirley! Why are you still asleep? You didn’t take Alvin to school or go to work?!”
Penney kicked my door open and stood at the foot of my bed, chattering nonstop.
“I quit my job,” I said, annoyed.
“What? You quit your job? How could you quit? How will my son take care of all of us?”
She continued to rant.
That evening, Curran came home, and Alvin returned from school.
“Where’s the dinner? Why didn’t you cook?”
Curran looked at me, puzzled.
I rolled my eyes. “I ate out. If you want to eat, cook for yourselves.”
“What?!”
Penney was furious again.
“Curran, look at this woman. All she knows is to spend money! You know what? She eve her job!”
I couldn’t understand why she thought she had the right to speak to me this way. After Curran and I were divorced, and now they were just temporarily staying in my place.
Curran, getting annoyed, snapped, “Shirley, if you’re not cooking, what are we suppose
eat?”
I almost laughed out loud. They had promised the night before that they understood mistakes and would treat me like a princess.
Yet here they were, still expecting me to play the role of a maid.
“What you eat has nothing to do with me!”
