Listening to his self–righteous tone, I was furious. But I had no choice but to swallow my pride and soften my voice.
“I don’t have enough money for the medical bills. Can you lend me five hundred dollars for
now?”
“What? Five hundred dollars?”
Curran’s voice on the other end of the line suddenly spiked, sharp and accusatory.
“Shirley, you’re such a wasteful woman! How did you rack up such a huge hospital bill? Do
you think making money is easy for me?”
He kept complaining, and with every word, I felt more and more desolate.
In the end, I borrowed a thousand dollars from an old classmate to pay the bills.
Before marriage, even though I only earned two or three thousand dollars a month, I was
content.
Back then, I could eat and drink whatever I wanted.
I didn’t know why, but after marriage, I couldn’t even afford a two–dollar drink anymore.
The thought of divorce grew stronger in my heart.
When I got home, I saw them all lounging on the couch, staring at their phones.
There was trash scattered all over the floor, but no one bothered to clean up.
Penney gave me a quick glance and rolled her eyes.
“I knew it! She’s just trying to get money from you! How could her hospital bill possibly be five
hundred dollars?
It doesn’t need so much money, and look, she’s back even though you don’t send her any
money!”
I ignored her mocking comments and put the lobsters I bought into the pot.
Penney, munching on snacks, walked over. Her eyes widened when she saw the four lobsters
on the plate.
“You wasteful fool! Why did you buy four lobsters? Didn’t I tell you to buy just three?”
She grumbled as she reached for the biggest lobster, ready to take it for herself.
Alvin, drawn in by the smell, came over, too, abandoning the TV. He reached out with both
hands, trying to grab a lobster.
“Grandma gets one, Dad gets one, and the other two are all mine!”
Hearing Alvin say that, my heart hurt a little.
Since they treated me this way, there was no reason for me to be nice to them anymore.
I slapped Penney and Alvin’s hands away and, under their watchful eyes, carried all four
lobsters into my bedroom.
Who said these were for you? I bought them for myself!*
I locked the door behind me. They finally realized what was happening and started banging
on it furiously.

Tumously.
“You sl*t, come out here!”
“How dare you eat everything by yourself?”
“You really don’t care about us, do you?”

Even Alvin was knocking on the door now, shouting, “Mom! How could you do this? How ca
mother not share with her son and sneak food for herself?”
I ignored them, popped in my headphones, and happily chomped on the lobsters while watching a show.
After finishing the lobsters, I let out a satisfied burp, feeling a sense of relief like I’d never fe before.
This was how life should be!
I felt life should be about doing whatever I want without caring about anyone else’s opinic eating and drinking whatever I choose.
When I finally opened the door, the three of them were standing there, furious.
Curran stepped forward and glanced at the empty lobster shells on the plate, seething w
anger.
“Shirley! How selfish can you be? You ate all four lobsters by yourself!”
