Under the menacing gaze of the man in the next bed, Curran left.
At the time, I didn’t understand what he meant, but it quickly became clear.
The day I was discharged from the hospital, I went to the front desk to pay the medical fees. But when I checked my card, it showed insufficient funds.
I had no idea where my money had gone.
I earned six thousand dollars a month, and after paying for basic living expenses, I usually had about two thousand dollars left.
But now, there was nothing in my account.
The nurse at the payment counter frowned.
“If you don’t have the money, you can wait to have someone send it to you. Let the next person pay first,” she suggested.
The people behind me started murmuring.
“She looks all dressed up. How can she not have five hundred dollars on her?”
“If you don’t have money, move aside. We need to pay!”
I frantically opened my phone, only to realize my money had already been transferred out.
The account it went to was one I knew well. It was Curran’s account!
Three days ago, I woke up to find Curran fiddling with my phone.
I asked him what he was doing with it, and he said he just wanted to have a look.
Now I realized he must have transferred all my money then!
A surge of anger rose within me.
“How dare he take my money?” I thought.
Hearing the complaints from behind me, I apologized and stepped out of the line.
Just as I was about to call Curran to confront him, he called me first.
“Shirley, come home right now. You’ve been in the hospital long enough. There’s stuff at home that needs your attention! Don’t think you can slack off! By the way, Alvin and I want lobsters. Buy three on your way back.”
“Three? What about your mom?” I asked.
Immediately, Penney’s voice came over the phone. “What do you mean? Of course, I want one! One for me, one for Curran, and one for Alvin!” she explained.
“Curran, so you’re saying there’s none for me?” I asked.
There was a long silence on the other end before Curran sighed and said, “Shirley, you know our family isn’t rich. Four lobsters cost a lot of money! Anyway, you usually just eat vegetables. Don’t bother with lobsters.”
Even though I had always known they never treated me like part of the family, I had still been kind to them.
Whenever there was something delicious in the house, it was never for me.
But all the household chores were always mine.

He claimed I liked vegetables, but that wasn’t true.
He said Alvin needed more nutrition than vegetables and that Penney needed to supplement
er calcium because of her age.
And he needed to eat more to replenish his energy after a hard day’s work.
So, naturally, I was the only one who had to eat vegetables.
“Curran, did you transfer all my money? I can’t even pay my medical fees now!”
“Oh, that’s your fault. It’s the consequence of defying me that day. Besides, you’re just a
woman. What do you need all that money for? I’m your man, and it’s only right that I take care of your money!”
