Chapter 8
My cell phone suddenly buzzed in my coat pocket, so I took it out.
However, seeing that it was Jimmy’s name being displayed on the screen, I hesitated for a while before pressing the answer button.
It was time to end things properly and say goodbye to the ten years of my youth I had wasted.
Jimmy’s casual voice sounded from the
phone, “Debbie, where are you? The wedding ceremony is over and we’re having a celebration dinner tonight. Reina said she wanted to invite you to join us.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at his shamelessness.

“Jimmy, if you’ve got some screw loss in
your head, you should see a doctor. Are you out of your mind, inviting your ex–fiancé to
celebrate your wedding with another woman? Just how thick skin can you be?” I asked.

Jimmy went silent. He was clearly stunned by
harsh words. For a few moments, there was only the sound of his ragged breathing on the line.
Then after a long while, he snapped, “Are you out of your mind? So, you don’t want to get married anymore, huh? Reyna is being generous inviting you and you, a mere cripple, can’t even appreciate it! Looks like you’re the one with issues!”
This time, I refused to swallow my anger anymore and retaliated his insult without

mercy, “It’s your brain that is having an issue. You, Jimmy, are also a cripple, a brain–dead person.”
“What you had said was right. I have never any intention of marrying you in the first place. Didn’t I say to you the other day that I didn’t want the position of Mrs. Hill anymore? I’m not a trash can that is willing to collect whatever garbage shows up!”
Jimmy roared, “Debbie Marshall, you fucking
His outburst was successfully cut off by the airport announcement calling out my name as I had not boarded the plane for a long time.
When he spoke again, there was a slight tremble in his voice, “Debbie, where are you?”

“At the airport,” I answered.
Then, I tossed my phone back into my bag. After I completed all the procedures, I followed the airport staff to my first–class
seat.
It was not until just before the takeoff, that a flight attendant reminded me to turn off my phone and I realized the call was still connected. When I picked up my phone, I was surprised to see that Jimmy had not hung up either.
His anxious shout came through from the phone, “Debbie, can you please say
something? Where are you going? Stay there! I’m coming to get you!”
I closed my eyes. All I felt was only an exhaustion.

Without a second thought, I ended the call. Then, I blocked him and deleted every way he could reach me before turning off my phone for good, afraid he would pester me.
The plane glided on the runway and the world outside my window blurred as the city faded behind me. I took one last look from the window, at the place where I had spent the last ten years. From now on, I would move forward and this was my fresh start.
After more than ten hours in the air, I finally arrived in Lavenia Country. My parents had been waiting eagerly for me at the arrival gate. They were holding a bouquet of flowers in their hands, with excitement on their faces.
When they saw me, they pulled me into a warm hug. I nestled in their tight embrace

and could not stop my tears from falling down. It sure was good to be home.
When I settled into my father’s spacious car,
a pang of sadness hit me. How could I have left my family for a man who had shown me nothing but cruelty? At that moment, I wanted to slap myself for the years I had wasted.
During the entire drive, my mother held my hand tightly as if she was afraid to let go. She feared I would disappear again. As her gaze lingered on my injured leg, her eyes reddened with a dark and scary look in them.
