Chapter 6
Two years ago, on an ordinary day that felt much like any other, Lucian had made a casual promise to find me a pair of crystal earrings worthy of formal occasions.
Now, he had finally kept that promise. Unfortunately, the irony was not lost on me; I no longer needed them.
“Savannah, aren’t you going to try it on?” He asked.
I faced Lucian’s eager, deep gaze.
After a few moments of silence hung in the air, I reached for the lovely earrings I had long since lost interest in.
Rather than wearing them as Lucian had hoped, I cradled them for just a moment before tilting my wrist, allowing them to tumble to the floor, where they shattered into a million glinting pieces.
Fragments of crystal danced across

Lucian’s suit pants, and it was only then that I noticed the blood–stained holes on his calves, evidence of the dog‘ s bite.
I chose to ignore them, looking up with a calm facade. “The gift is ugly; I don’t like it. Is there anything else? If not, I’m leaving.”
Untouched coffee dripped slightly from his tightly clenched fist, staining his sleeve, a small detail that seemed to slip his mind despite his usual obsession with cleanliness.
He pressed a hand to his temple, looking at me with a slight, mocking smile that felt more like a challenge.
“Savannah, how long are you going to keep playing this game? Hmm? You strong- armed Ophelia into resigning, and now you‘ re breaking up with me right when she needs to go abroad for heart surgery. right now? Fine, let’s hit the Civil Affairs
Bureau; we can get a license first thing in the morning.”
With a firm grip, Lucian seized my arm, pulling me closer before I could even think of resisting.
But as his gaze locked onto mine, he was taken aback to find only cold indifference. reflected in my eyes.
I shrugged off his hand in disgust, having no desire to clarify the ludicrous accusations Ophelia had hurled my way.
“Lucian,” I said, my voice calm and unwavering, “let me be clear one last time. We are finished. I have no intention of marrying you, nor do I possess any of the so–called demands you‘ ve conjured in your mind. If we happen to meet at future reunions, just act as if you don’t know me; there’s no need for pleasantries.”
No dramatic accusations broke the silence, nor did any tears fall to tug at his heart.

Lucian merely watched as I stood and walked over to the counter, where I
ordered three lattes, sweetened to perfection, and had them packed for takeout.
A shadow of anxiety crept into his gaze as he followed me outside, his face paling with concern.
“Savannah,” he implored, “I’m your first love.”
I turned to him, unfazed. “So what?”
“You… you were the one who blushed and poured out your heart,” Lucian stammered, his confidence slipping away.
“You were the one who said you’d never felt this way about anyone else before…”
His voice faltered, and I could see the doubt in his eyes. “On graduation day, we vowed to stay together, no matter the odds.
So…”
He stumbled over his words, desperation creeping in. “So you can’t just end things.

I couldn’t help but laugh at him. “You don’t seriously believe the sweet nothings said during the honeymoon phase, do you?”
