Chapter 46
Lorraine despised the memory of every single detail from last night, which replayed in her mind throughout the day like an unwanted movie. She couldn’t bring herself to face Callisto, yet he had the audacity to show up today. It was Sunday, after all, his day to spend time with the twins
There was a tight knot of bitterness in Lorraine’s chest as she baked cookies in the kitchen. It was her way of avoiding him today. She kept herself so busy that she didn’t even have time to use the bathroom
The hangover from the previous night had also taken its toll, and they hadn’t made it to church that morning. Fortunately, the twins woke up late and missed the chaos between her and Callisto earlier. Mona, however, had seen it all and was surely brimming with questions that Lorraine wasn’t prepared to answer. She needed to protect the twins innocence, but she also worried that they might misunderstand and think she and Callisto were back together, which was far from the truth.
“Hmm. Mona’s eyes narrowed as she observed Lorraine, not letting her out of sight.
Mona was leaning against the counter, arms and legs crossed, watching Lorraine’s every move.
Lorraine sighed as she prepared mango juice, availing Mona’s gaze. “Mons, no one’s keeping an eye on the twins.
“Calliste and Gideon are. Mona replied nonchalantly.
Sot someone from our side, Lorraine commered. “You know I don’t trust them trying to hubysit the twins”
“Bu you trust HIM enough to sleep with hun in your bed?” Mona’s sarcastic tone hit Lorraine like a ton of bricks “You still haven’t explained why I woke up to find your clothes scattered all over the living room, stairs, and your bedroom door.”
Embarrassment washed over Lorraine as she closed her eyes tightly. Her lips pressed together into a thin line. “T–That was that was She searched for the right words. “I got drunk, alright! No, I was already drunk before coming home for dinner because Cady happened.”
“Uh–huh“” Mona raised an eyebrow, took a seat across from Lorraine, grabbed a cookie, and chewed it thoughtfully. “If you were already drunk. what possessed you to drink even more in the presence of your ex–husband! Nasty girl”
“Mona” Lorraine sighed, knowing Mona wouldn’t drop the matter until she got the full story.
If she had been sober, she wouldn’t have slept with her ex–husband in a million years. The man who cheated on her with her younger sister and had
a daughter with her.
Lorraine understood how shocking last night’s incident must have been for Mona. She owed her an explanation.
“Cady had another breakdown because of her ex–husband’s affair. I related to her story, and I felt awful. So, I started drinking more than I should have. But I managed to get home and keep my composure. But seeing Callisto at home too made me sick. My mood soured, and I wanted to lash out at him. But I couldn’t be violent in front of the kids, so I resorted to drinking again that night.” Lorraine recounted the events leading up to the blurred memories. “All I know is that I hate Callisto so much. I felt awful, my heart was pounding, and I wasn’t capable of thinking straight. I don’t even remember how a simple conversation turned into something I deeply regret now,
The expression on Lorraine’s face was a mix of disgust, disappointment, self–loathing, hatred, anger, and, most of all, regret.
Mona took in all of Lorraine’s genuine emotions, feeling somewhat relieved.
Even though Mona had helped Callisto earn points with Lorraine, Lucian, and Lucio by cooking, she still firmly believed that Lorraine shouldn’t get back together with him. Lorraine had already endured enough pain.
Mona knew Lorraine was soft–hearted, making her vulnerable. Getting back together with Callisto would be a gamble for her heart!
Mona didn’t believe Callisto would stay true to Lorraine and the twins once he regained his memory and realized that his true love was still Amber and Anjie.
Callisto would be of no use. They had once believed in his promises, but he had proven to be a man of empty words.
Mona then asked seriously, “Did you use protection?”
Lorraine’s eyes widened, and she turned pale. “W–We. Well, we were drunk,” her voice grew smaller and smaller as she tried to recall. “I don’t think we had condoms.. No. It happened unintentionally, so.. No”
“Is it your ovulation period now?” Mona pressed further.
Lorraine’s face drained of color. “I–I.” Her face fell as she stared blankly, like a robot shutting down.
Mona squeezed her eyes shut. “Oh sweet heavens! You better start praying you’re not pregnant after what you did, Loraine!”

Panic surged through Lorraine. Her chest tightened, and her heart pounded so loudly she could hear it in her ears, as if it was right beside her. Her whole body turned cold as if her soul was about to leave her.
She stopped what she was doing, frozen in place, her eyes wide and staring into nothingness.
‘I can’t get pregnant…” She repeated in her mind over and over.
Her anxiety grew as she remembered how many times they had… last night.
Regret filled her heart even more, and the fear of facing the consequences consumed her thoughts.
Lorraine gasped as two little bodies suddenly hugged her waist.

Lorraine placed a hand on her chest and took a shaky breath, bending down to face them. They were flushed and drenched in sweat, likely from playing outside in the heat.
Lorraine had to pull herself together and shake off the weakness she felt j

“Lucio, didn’t I tell you not to overexert yourself? Do you want us rushing to the hospital again?” she asked worriedly.
Lucio grinned. “Mommy, don’t worry, I’m not tired at all. It’s just hot outside, so I got sweaty! But Uncle Gideon got me covered with his mini–fan! Actually. Mommy, if you ended up with that kind–not our real dad–it wouldn’t be a problem for me”
“Gideon?” Lorraine’s face twisted in surprise.
“No way!” Lucian chimed in. “Uncle Wayne is still the best on the list, Lucio!”
“I did not say otherwise, though!”

Callisto, who was standing at the entrance of the kitchen, overheard the conversation and shot a glare at Gideon behind him. Gideon raised both hands in the air defensively. “The twins are just messing with you. Why haven’t you gotten used to it yet? “Tsk!”
