Chapter 43
For some reason, Mona felt guilty about her behavior towards Callisto after he had stormed out. He seemed sincere and serious about the favor he had asked, which wasn’t difficult to gram. Yet, deep down, she knew her reasons for refusing were valid.
Still, she kept glancing over to her neighbor’s house, where Callisto was. Through the open kitchen window, she could see the thick smoke rising
and hear Callisto’s frustrated slunits.
Mona sighed heavily. Lorraine was out meeting Cady today, so Mona was left to watch the twins by herself.
She got up from her relaxing chair in the backyard and called for Lucian and Lucio. They drove their mini cars over to her. “Yes, Granny?”
“Come on, you two, stop playing for now. Your faces are red and you’re dripping with sweat.”
“Are we going inside?” Lucian asked ghly.
“No, we’re going to your father’s house,” she said.
The twins‘ eyes widened in shock. “What!”
They resisted vehemently, as they despised their father. But under Mona’s insistence, they had no choice but to sulkily follow her.
Mona pressed the doorbell, and soon, Callisto’s assistant appeared. He looked at her with curiosity for a moment before his gaze fell to the twins.
“What brings you here, Madam?” he asked, his brow furrowed.
Mona hesitated but decided to go through with her plan. “Let us in Callisto asked me to help him cook”
“Oh!” Gideon’s frown disappeared, replaced by a look of relief as if he had just seen a savior. He swung the door wide open to let them in.
“Who’s at the door! Just then, Callisto emerged from the kitchen to see who had ring the bell.
“It’s us” Mona replied unenthusiastically.
Callisto’s jaw dropped when he saw her, and his eyes widened even more when he noticed the twins on either side of Mona.
“My twin sons!” he exclaimed, putting down the spatula. His face lit up with a broad smile, barely containing his joy
Meanwhile, Lucian and Lucio surveyed the house with curious eyes.
“It’s too dark in here, Lucio remarked.
“And it smells like men, too,” Lucian added.
Callisto’s smile didn’t fade as he approached Mona, bending down to meet the twins‘ gaze.
“It’s probably Gideon. He’s not a fan of showers,” Callisto said, playfully throwing his friend under the bus.
Gideon scowled. “Are you sure you kids can smell man odor or just burnt chicken from the kitchen! Your father is experimenting, that’s why”
“Ooh now that you mention it, creepy man, it does smell like something’s burning, Lucian said, covering his nose.
“What? How am I creepy?” Gideon asked, frowning
Callisto chuckled at the twins” antics. He straightened up to look at Mona.
“What brings you here?”
“What else?” Mona pursed her lips and took a deep breath, her tone intentionally half–hearted. “I’m going to help you with your chicken curry before you burn down not just your house, but the entire neighborhood”
“Really?!” Although he expected it, Callisto was still surprised Mona agreed to help.
They had only had their argument hours earlier. In fact, he was still upset about her harsh words, especially when she compared him unfavorably to Wayne and wished for Lorraine and Wayne to end up together
But seeing that Mona seemed to regret her words, even if she didn’t directly apologize, Callisto decided to forgive her in his heart.
He happily led Mona to the kitchen, where she saw the chaos he had created.

“Oh sweet mother- Mona almost swore at the sight. “Why is it so messy? Are you cooking or have you turned the kitchen into a science labs for your experiments?|”
“Yup.” Gideon confirmed from behind. “This is what I’ve been trying to tell you. And I’ve become the subject of his experiment.”
“Poor guy,” Lucian and Lucio murmured sympathetically.
Mona wasted no time. She set about cleaning up the mess with Callisto and Gideon’s help while the twins sat at the table, snacking away.
The day passed with Mona teaching Callisto how to cook properly. By sunset, they had not only made the chicken curry but also prepared other dishes that Lorraine and the twins loved.
As darkness settled in the sky, Lorraine decided it was time to head home. She had just left Cady’s place after comforting her through yet another breakdown. Since Cady’s husband had cruelly left her for another woman, just like Lorraine’s own past experience, Cady was often overwhelmed with sadness, and Lorraine was the one she turned to
It was impossible for Lorraine not to remember the times Cady had been there for her, bolstering her spirits. Their deep bond meant they understood each other’s pain of being abandoned by a spouse.
men could treat the women they once loved as if they were trash, so
Driving home, Lorraine felt a pang of bitterness. She wondered why some men easily discarded when they found someone new.
She shook her head and widened her eyes to snap herself out of it. After a few drinks with Cady, she was a bit tipsy, so she drove cautiously. After all, she didn’t want to end up like Callisto, especially with her kids waiting for her at home.
Once she parked the car, she hurried inside.
“Sweeties- Mommy’s back!” She was so out of sorts that she forgot the treats she had meant to bring them, coming home empty–handed. “Mommy!!” Lucio and Lucian were just as excited to see her. They rushed to hug her
“What took you so long?” Lucio asked
“Ol sorry, Doc Cady talked a lot, so I got held up. Where’s Mona! Did you behave while I was gone?
“Of course, Mom!” Lucian said proudly, but his expression soured. “Momany, I think Mona is siding with Mister Avellino. Today, she took us into his house and they cooked our dinner together! Can you believe that?”
“That’s right, Mommy! Lucio added, nodding eagerly.
Lorraine was taken aback by their revelation. “She did what?”
“Oh, Lorraine! You’re here!” Mona called out, just emerging from the kitchen.
Lorraine raised an eyebrow and frowned. “Hey, the twins are saying something about what you did today. Is that
“Oh,” Mona’s face showed a flash of guilt as she pouted. “Well, it’s not that I’m taking Callisto’s side or anything. But I couldn’t stand that idiot possibly blowing up his kitchen, so I helped him cook. We just saved some dinner for you.”
Lorraine grimaced. “You guys should eat first. I’m still full from all the food Cady and I had today.” She said disinterestedly.
“But you have to eat dinner Mona insisted.
Lucian huffed. “I’m full too, so I won’t eat yet. I’ll wait for Mommy,
“Me too! I’m not hungry enough for dinner yet!” Lucio chimed in
“Y–You.” Lorraine was surprised by her children. “You need to eat. Don’t wait for me because I’ll be starving by early morning?
“Us too!” they insisted
“Lorraine, Mona called with a meaningful tone.
With that. Lorraine had no choice but to join them for dinner to be with her children.
Callisto was at the forefront of serving the food. Lorraine couldn’t quite believe that he was actually trying to cook and had asked Mona for help. especially after their last conversation. Callisto’s stubbornness was truly something

“You don’t have to hesitate to taste everything. Lorraine. Mona and I made sure all of it is delicious, so dig in,” Callisto said with a smile.
She didn’t fuss; she just wanted to finish eating and leave. The important thing was that the twins wouldn’t go hungry.
The food turned out to be quite good. It was nothing like the last meal Callisto had made, which she had choked down just to avoid disappointing
him.
She regretted being so martyr–like before. There was no need to torture her stomach with that devilish cooking.
“So how is it?” Callisto asked eagerly. “Even though Mona helped and guided me a lot, I did most of the work, so I cooked it. What do you think?”
“Good,” she said flatly, not looking at him.
Callisto’s eyes brightened at the praise. He ate happily, constantly watching Lorraine’s face for any reaction. But she kept a neutral expression, showing no emotion
After they finished,
- Callisto didn’t leave immediately. He volunteered to wash the dishes, which Mona and Lorraine didn’t refuse.
When he was done, he found Lorraine in the living room, sipping on a drink. The twins were already in their room, and the house was quiet.
Callisto’s presence caught Lorraine’s attention, who had been staring off into space.
Her eyes were cold as she looked up at him. “You’re done. You may leave now so I can lock the door.”
But he boldly approached and sat down on the couch next to her. He could smell the alcohol from close range. “Have you been drinking all day?” he asked with curiosity and concert.
She rolled her eyes and slumped into the couch, clearly tired. “What’s it to you?”
It was evident Lorraine was in no mood and was probably very angry, channeling her frustration into drinking.
The chances were high that Callisto way the cause, and he knew it. But he stayed by her side instead of leaving her alone.
He grabbed an unopened bottle of wine from the nearby table and took a effect. It seemed Lorraine was going through something intense
From the first taste, he could tell it was a strong drink with a severe
“Let me join you for a while,” he said with a unile on his lips.
