Chapter 15
Lorraine’s heart plummeted upon hearing Cady’s news. “I’m so sorry, Lorraine, but Lucio has severe aplastic anemia. He needs an urgent blood transfusion to control the bleeding and relieve his symptoms. The transfusion will also quickly increase the red blood cells his bone marrow isn’t producing.”
The room spun around her as the weight of Cady’s words sank in. She felt faint, clutching her forehead in disbelief, her stomach churning with anxiety. Her legs felt weak, barely able to support her.
“Blood transfusion…” Lorraine’s voice trembled as she looked up at Cady, tears welling in her eyes. “But…”
Cady sighed deeply, his expression one of deep sympathy. “I know, Lorraine. Lucio and Lucian have a golden blood type that doesn’t match yours. Since Rh–null blood is extremely rare, we don’t have it in our hospital. It’s not publicly available either, and obtaining it can cost tens of thousands of dollars per unit. The price and availability depend on the urgency and specific circumstances.”
Lorraine buried her face in her hands, her sobs filling the room. The sound echoed off the sterile walls, a stark contrast to the silence that had followed Cady’s announcement.
After several agonizing minutes, she mastered the strength to speak again. “I don’t care how much it costs, Cady. Please, can you help me find a donor?”
“Even hospitals worldwide struggle to find Rh–null donors. Given Lucio’s condition, he’ll need these transfusions on a regular basis” Cady hesitated before continuing. “Your ex–husband might be our best hope for a potential donor
The mention of Callisto made Lorraine’s heart constrict. She hadn’t thought of him in this context until Cady brought it up. Her pulse quickened, memories flooding back
Callisto… It had been years since she last saw the man who fathered her children. The bitterness of their past still lingered, making it hard for her to even utter his name.
She had no idea what his life was like now–whether he was still with Amber, how many children they had, how big their family was, or how happy they were. Just the thought of it made her feel like she was bleeding inside. She clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms as she fought to stay composed
It seemed unfair. She was the one who had been wronged, yet it felt like she was the one receiving karma. Lucio didn’t deserve thi
“Why why does this have to happen?” she asked in despair, her voice breaking. “What did we do to deserve this?”
After a few more moments with Cady, Lorraine left the office, her legs feeling like jelly. It seemed like the world was against her. Just when she thought she could finally enjoy a good life with her twins after working so hard to become a successful businesswoman, this happened.
She had always feared facing Lucio’s disease. It felt like her prayers had gone unheard by the heavens.
She could lose Lucio at any moment if he wasn’t treated properly
Entering the hospital restroom, Lorraine let out a torrent of tears, staying there fogahost an hour to purge the pain and resentment she felt before finding a new resolve.
She couldn’t afford to lose Lucio. She would die of a broken heart.
She had to make sacrifices,
After washing her face and trying to erase the remnants of her tears, Lorraine went upstairs and entered Lucio’s room.
“Mommy, what took you so long her son complained as she walked in.

She forced a smile and spoke sweetly. “I just got caught up talking with Dr. Cady, sweetie. I’m sorry. Do you need to go to the bathroom or something!”
Lucio noticed the swelling of her eyes and the redness of her nose and lips. The stress was evident in her usually neatly combed hair. He reached out and gently touched her hand, his small fingers warm and comforting.
He pretended not to notice and said, “The nurse helped me go to the bathroom, so I’m okay now. But it was quite embarrassing. Mommy.”
“Oh goodness!” Lorraine chuckled, sitting beside him and cuddling him tenderly. “Hmm, how can my baby be so adorable!”
“I got it from you. Mommy!” He forced a sweet smile and hugged his mother back. He swallowed before speaking again. “Dr. Cady said I’m fine, right?”
Lorraine hesitated, her voice cracking as she replied, “Of course My baby is strong.”
“Mommy is not a good liar, Lucio thought, hiding his tearful eyes. He could see through her attempt to be strong for him, and it made his heart ache.
He knew he wasn’t feeling well but kept his feelings to himself for his mother’s sake.
He smiled brightly and kissed her cheek. “Mommy, let’s hurry and go home then. I’m sure Lucian is bored at home withour
me to play with!”
“Um. Lorraine stroked his cheek and kissed his forehead. “Alright, we’ll do that, after Dr. Cady decides to discharge us. okay
“Oh, Lucio thought he might have a more serious problem than he initially believed. Though curious, he didn’t have the courage to ask his mother, afraid of hurting her. His young mind raced with questions he dared not voice.
“Why don’t we call home and ask Mona to bring Lucian here to play with you?” Lorraine suggested, noticing the unhappy look in his eyes.
Lucio’s face brightened, and he nodded eagerly. “Please do, Mommy!”
He would just ask Lucian to eavesdrop and tell him about his condition.
Before Lorraine could dial Mona’s number, a sudden knock on the door startled both of them. Lorraine’s heart skipped a beat, the sound echoing in the quiet room.
Lorraine got up to answer the door, expecting a nurse or perhaps Cady,
But when she opened the door, an unexpected face greeted her
Her eyes widened as she looked up at the man, her entire body trembling. She froze, feeling as if she had been doused with ice–cold water.
‘C–Gal—
Before she could finish, the man at the door enveloped her in a ght embrace, full of longing
“Lorraine?” he exclaimed. His grip was so strong she could hardly breathe, let alone recover from the shock. The familiar scent of his cologne overwhelmed her, bringing back a flood of memories she had tried to bury.
He held her tightly, as if afraid she would vanish if he let go

Lorraine stood motionless, her mind racing. The scent of his cologne, familiar yet distant, overwhelmed her senses. She wanted to push him away, but her body betrayed her, leaning into the warmth she once knew.
