Chapter 8
Ethan said there was trouble at the company.
Samuel asked what it was, but Ethan said he didn’t know.
Samuel looked at him in confusion but eventually released me, put on his clothes, and left.
Ethan turned to me, his face tense.
“Are you coming?”
Without hesitation, I didn’t even grab my documents and ran off with Ethan.
Ethan took me to a village in the countryside. It was here I realized Ethan knew everything. He knew I wasn’t Samuel’s real sister, and he knew…
In short, he knew it all.
I held a bowl of steaming porridge and, surrounded by the smoke, asked him quietly, “Don’t you mind?”
He was startled, immediately sitting up straight and looking at me seriously.
“You are the truest flower in this world.”
I was stunned, wondering, “Who describes a flower as real?”
The village was small, and the people there made a living by farming. I found it interesting and comforting to spend my days working in the fields with the host family.
Ethan worked, too.
The host family even praised me, saying I looked so delicate but worked quickly in the fields.
I smiled and helped them sweep the floor.
It felt like we were really living a peaceful, warm life.
But such a peaceful life didn’t last long.
Samuel found me.
His face was cold, and his eyes glinted with malice as he stared at me.
Several bodyguards in suits stood by him, watching us with sharp eyes.
Luckily, the host family had gone to the market that day, or they would have been terrified.
Ethan took off his coat and draped it over my head.
“Don’t lift it.”
This was the first time he spoke to me in a commanding tone.
Then, the sounds of intense fighting and muffled grunts echoed around us.
No matter how good Ethan’s martial arts were, it was impossible for him to win against so many people.
I was both scared and desperate. I yanked the coat off, and what I saw shocked me. The floor was littered with bodies, all sprawled in different directions, and Ethan was trembling, covered in blood.
Blood kept pouring from the corner of his mouth as he turned his head to look at me.

One of the bodyguards, his face full of brutality, had found a wooden stick and was about to swing it down on Ethan’s back.
“Ethan!”
I screamed, rushing toward him.
“Grab her!”
At Samuel’s command, a bodyguard pinned me down, preventing me from moving.
I struggled, unable to breathe properly, the pressure in my chest suffocating me. I ended up fainting.
When I woke up, I wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but I was back at the manor.
The maid saw I was awake and immediately went to call Samuel.
I stared coldly at her.
“Go ahead and call him. I’ll jump out of the window right now.”
I was on the second floor, and I knew that even if I jumped, I wouldn’t die, but the maid knew that, too. She didn’t care, and she insisted on going
to call him.
I threw off the blanket and stepped barefoot onto the window frame.
“You think I’m joking?” I smiled darkly and then jumped.
Samuel arrived just in time, catching me mid–air and throwing me back onto the bed.
I was dazed from the fall.
“Why are you trying to kill yourself? Do you really like Ethan that much?”
“Where is he?”
Samuel was wearing a white shirt, his sleeves rolled up, revealing his muscular arms.
“He’s dead?”
I looked at him in disbelief, my eyes starting to redden.
“What did you say?”
“I said he’s dead. Because of you, he’s dead.”
I couldn’t say anything. I clutched my chest and collapsed onto the bed, feeling as if a huge stone was pressing down on me. My breathing became labored, my face turned red, and tears fell in big drops.
“He was the most promising bodyguard in this batch. I was planning to transfer him to headquarters. What a shame. Not only did you delay his career, but you also got him killed.”
I pulled my face out from the blanket, my eyes bloodshot.
“Samuel, you…”
“No. It’s not me, it’s you. A daughter of a woman who used to work as a prostitute, dreaming of love. It was all wrong from the start. Do you understand? Ethan was such a good guy, and you got him killed. You’re just like your mother, cheap.”
This time, I couldn’t retort.
I got Ethan killed.
