Chapter 13
With Stella’s reminder, everyone suddenly remembered that there was still a little girl in the office
Dominick turned around and followed Stella’s pointing finger, his curiosity piqued. He was dying to know what kind of kid would have the guts to hit his son. To his surprise, it was a tiny little girl, barely above his knees.
nessy with water. Her large eyes were wide with
At that moment, the girl was hiding behind a money tree, looking utterly pitiful. Her clothes were messy fear, which made her look like a scared little kinen
At the sight of her. Dominick looked at Grayson, who was cuddled up in Marisa’s arms for comfor
for comfort, Dominick furrowed his brows even deeper.
He couldn’t believe Grayson had been brought to tears by this tiny girl. Honestly, at this point, he had to give some credit to her for being so small and still managing to make two first graders cry.
Dominick walked over and bent down to stare at Serena with a mix of confusion and intrigue. “Did you bully them”
Serena bit her lip and stayed silent, her big eyes locking with Dominick’s. There was a mix of fear and stubbornness in her gaze, as though she was determined not to back down.
For a moment, Dominick froze. Those eyes looked so familiar to him. Not just her eyes, but her whole face.
Something about the girl made his heart twist unexpectedly, and he softened his cone. “What’s your name?”
Serena bit her lip and her eyes darted around, clearly thinking hard about whether or not to tell this man ser name,
Finally, in a tiny voice, she answered, “Serena Sution”
“Serena Sutton…” Dominick repeated her name under his breath, shivers running down his spine, his heart racing.
At that moment, Marissa looked up from Grayson, her gaze catching on the little girl. The instant she saw Serena, her whole body tensed.
Her mind raced with a possibility. It can’t be. She’s the same kid who was with Paisley this morning! She just said her last name was Sutton. That means… she’s Paisley’s daughter
Alarm bells went off inside Marisa’s head. Her grip on Grayson’s arm tightened without her realizing it
“Marissa, you’re making me hurt.. Grayson whined in a high–pitched voice
Snapping back to reality, Marissa quickly let go of him, her face filled with concern. “Oh. sorry, sweetle. I didn’t mean to hurt you. You’re not mad at me are you?”
Grayson shook his head with a smile and snuggled into Marissa’s arms. “Nah, I love you the most. I’m not mad at all
Dominick didn’t seem to notice the exchange between Marissa and Grayson. His full attention was still on the little girl in front of him. His voice grew firmer as he stared at her. “Why’d you hit them?”
Before the situation could escalate further, the principal, Michelle Cooper, jumped in to smooth things over, clearly worried that Dominic would went to the school.
“Mr. Vanderbilt, we’ve already gotten to the bottom of this. Serena is just a troublemaker. She snuck into the classroom of the elementary school while the teacher wasn’t looking. She startled Grayson and Stella
“When Stella told her to apologize, she refused and even hit them. This whole mess is her fault.
Grayson’s teacher also chimed in to back up the story. “Exactly, she’s clearly from a family with no discipline. Otherwise, why would she be the only one sneaking around while the other kids stayed pur?”
“Yeah, for a kid with behavior problems like this, we definitely won’t keep her around. When her parents show up, we’ll ask them to take her out of the school” Michelle continued.
Michelle was trying to present a solution to case Dominick’s frustration.
In Michelle’s opinion, Serena was a nobody who had just transferred over from Brightmoor. Her parents even pulled some strings to get her into the school. There were plenty of kid waiting to get admited. Even if they kicked her out, it was no big deal.
“Ms. Principal, can you be responsible for your remarks! My daughter has behavior problems? Is this hour your school deals with things and educates kids?” Paisley’s voice cane sharply from the door, cuning through Michelle’s words.

Chapter 13
She had just rushed to the office to be greeted by such humiliating comments.
She was confused at first. It seemed like just a normal argument among kids, but why did it end up involving the principal? But when she called Serena’s teacher, she found out Serena had hit the son of a board member.
Worried that Serena might be scared, she hurried to the office. As soon as she walked in, however, she heard Michelle and the teachers trash–talking her daughter.
In the office, it seemed like everyone was against Serena, And her poor little girl was hiding behind a money tree, looking all messy and pitiful.
At that moment, Paisley fell a rush of anger she could barely control. As a mother, she couldn’t let these people get away with it. She wanted to tear into them right then and there, Hat, taking a deep breath, she forced herself to stay calm.
She strode into the office and headed straight for Serena, ignoring everyone che. “Baby, don’t be scared. Mommy’s here”
The moment Serena saw her mother, all the defiance in her eyes melted away. She finally broke down in tears. With trembling arms, she reached out for Paisley, desperate for comfort.
Paisley was o
only a step away when Serena leaped into her arms, “Mommy… I don’t want him anymore… I don’t want… brother.” Serena cried, her words barely audible between sobs.
“There, there. Let’s forget about him and everything, okay? Don’t cry, Mommy’s here Paisley whispered, holding Serena tight and patting her back gently.
Paisley wasn’t sure who the brother Serena had mentioned was, but she figured it was probably that little boy Maria said last night, the one who didn’t want to play with Seren.
“Paisley?” Dominic’s deep voice sounded.
At the sound of her name, Paisley froce for a second, and her hand hovered over Serena’s shoulder. She turned around to see Dominick standing there with a stunned expression.
When Paisley walked in, her whole focus had been on Serena, and she hadn’t noticed anyone else. Now, seeing Dominick there made her heart skip a beat
Serena’s teacher said the school had contacted her and the parents of the other two kids involved. In that case, Paisley thought of something.
Sure enough, when Paisley glanced behind Dominick, she saw Marissa standing there with Grayson clinging to her, clearly dependent on her
It had been four years since Paisley had seen her son. He had grown taller and looked more like Dominic
Seeing him nestled against Marissa with his hand holding onto Marissa’s shirt, Paisley felt her heart finally settle.
The little boy who used to run up to her and say “Mommy, I love you” was no longer the Grayson she knew. He now had his mother to love and he
must be happy now.
With a sigh, Paisley pulled her gaze away from Grayson, not wanting to dwell on it anymore.
What she didn’t notice was the way Grayson’s hand tightened even more on Marissa’s shirt. His eyes started to redden once again with tears threatening to spill.
