Sarah’s rant was just making me numb. She’d
already piled so much crap on me without
even thinking. It was clear, this time and last,
my sister was always going to take Jake’s
side, never her own flesh and blood brother.
The yelling was getting to me, so I just
snapped. I raised my hand and slapped Sarah
right across the face.
Her head snapped to the side, and she just
froze. Mom and Dad, who came running, also
looked shocked.
“Danny, what the hell do you think you’re
doing?!” Mom screamed, pulling Sarah into a
hug. Even Jake, looking all wobbly, got up to
comfort Sarah.
Dad looked at me like I’d personally let him.
down. “Danny, I don’t know what you’re
L
learning out there, but you hit your own
sister! It’s like you don’t even care about this
family!”
“It’s better when you’re not here, you just
make a mess of everything.”
I looked Dad straight in the eye, with a
sarcastic tone. “When was I ever a part of
this family? My super awesome family
remodeled my room after all these years into
a freakin‘ gaming room for my cousin.”
Mom and Dad flinched, looking away, and
Jake, seeing the moment was passing, cried a
little. “I’m sorry Danny, it’s all my fault. If it
wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be making my
parents mad.
“If I wasn’t here, everyone would be happy. I’ll
く
just go, I’m so grateful for everything, all the
years my parents and sister have been so
nice to me.” He took a step towards the door,
but Sarah grabbed him before he got too far.
Now Mom and Dad weren’t yelling at me, but were busy making Jake feel better. I caught the brief look of satisfaction on Jake’s face,
then grabbed my suitcase and headed to the
guest room downstairs.
