Chapter 4
Chapter 4
If Quentin really saw Taylor as just a sister, would he let them call each other husband and wife?
If she was really just a sister to him, would he have left me and Ruby hanging when I needed him the most, just to take care of Taylor’s petty issues?
He wrote, “Once this case is over, I’ll have more time for you and Ruby.”
But my life was already over, so his hopes were bound to fall apart.
I’d been gone for a while now. He’d never get my sincere apologies again, and he lost Ruby for good.
Quentin rented out an entire luxury event hall on Taylor’s birthday.
He was dressed in a custom suit, standing tall and confident, while Taylor was in a wedding dress he had designed for her. She was holding onto his arm, and they looked like the perfect couple.
Taylor said she knew it wouldn’t be easy for them to stay together forever. Therefore, she wanted Quentin to help her make her wish come true–marrying the one she loved, even if it was just for show.
Quentin hesitated at first, but when she told him he was the one she loved, he agreed right away. “Tay, you deserve the best love in the world!”
He guided Taylor around, smiling as they greeted each guest, his face glowing with genuine happiness.

Even though Quentin kept holding himself back from crossing that final line, each step he took made it clear he was pulling away from our relationship.
I drifted through the grand wedding hall, overwhelmed by nothing but deep irony.
Quentin took the microphone, gazing at Taylor beside him with deep affection. “We’re here today to celebrate the birthday of my beloved princess, Tay!”
He signaled, but the birthday cake didn’t come out as expected, and the video he’d set up didn’t play on the screen.
Instead, a man dressed as a priest slowly appeared from backstage and positioned himself between Taylor and Quentin.
The priest held the microphone and turned to Taylor. “Ms. Taylor Cross, will you love and cherish Mr. Quentin Scofield, in good times and bad, in sickness and health, through joy and sorrow, for the rest of your life?”

When I saw the confusion on Quentin’s face, I instantly understood, and my heart dropped.
Taylor was really cunning. She turned the birthday party into a wedding without telling Quentin, just to make everyone think they were already a couple!
That way, even if Quentin tried to deny it later, he wouldn’t have any way out.
With the guests all stunned by the surprise “birthday proposal“, Taylor shyly responded, ” Yes, I do!”
Quentin, being the sharp lawyer he was, knew right away he’d been tricked. When the priest turned to him with the question, he didn’t answer immediately but shifted his gaze toward Taylor.
Taylor and I both knew that Quentin would never let her get embarrassed in public.
So, she looked at him with those pleading eyes and gently hooked her pinky around his–a move she always used to get her way.
As expected, Quentin couldn’t say no. Despite the hesitation in his eyes, said, “I do.”

I found it hilarious. If Quentin was going to agree anyway, why bother with all that drama? The audience broke into thunderous applause and chanted, “Kiss! Kiss!”
Taylor gave Quentin an expectant look. But before he could react, his phone rang at the worst possible time. He checked the screen, shot Taylor an apologetic look, and answered the call.
It was a colleague from the law firm.
I drifted over to the phone and could hear the frantic voice on the other end. “Quentin, the judgment just came in. Ms. Taylor Cross only has to pay monetary damages.
“But the info in the judgment about the deceased… matches Sharon Eastlake’s exactly!”
