When I Was Pregnant, My Boyfriend Marrie… 1/8
Chapter 5
On the way home from the hospital, we stayed silent.
I suggested a divorce, and he agreed without hesitation.
I got home and pushed the door open.
Sophic, wearing his white shirt, threw herself into his arms, hugging his waist, her big, watery eyes looking at him in confusion.
“Arthur, who is she?”
Arthur glanced at me awkwardly, his voice gentle.
“A friend.”
She seemed satisfied with the answer.
She pecked out from his embrace, half her face showing with delicate makeup, a provocative smile on her lips.
Her arrogance was backed by his silent approval.
I clenched my fingers, swallowing the bitterness in my throat.
Arthur went upstairs to get the divorce papers, leaving us in silent confrontation.

Sophie crossed her arms, looking down at me with a victorious gaze, her eyes full of pity.
“How pathetic! You wasted so many years on him, only to be abandoned.”
She stared intently at my face as she spoke.
She wanted me to lose my composure, to make herself look more gentle and virtuous.
I stared back at her, expressionless.
“You’re the pathetic one. He’s a man I discarded, and you still flaunt him.”
Her smile froze, and the look she gave me was filled with intense hatred.
She gritted her teeth, calmed herself, and then leaned in close to my ear with a smile.
She said each word slowly, “Guess what? Now that I’m back, who do you think should leave?”
“If you guess right, I’ll reward you with a divorce agreement.”
I frowned impatiently.
Her tone shifted, and her smile widened.
“I heard your newborn daughter isn’t doing well. She probably

won’t make it, right?”
“Don’t get mad. I’ve got some good news for you.”
“Arthur and I are expecting a baby in six months.”
“I don’t mind if you treat our child as your own.”

We’re both women. She knew exactly how to hit where it hurt, trying to provoke me.
A wave of hatred surged through me, and for the first time, I felt the urge to kill someone.
With a loud “slap,” Sophie turned her head, her taunting words cut off.
“Leslie, what are you doing?”
Arthur’s angry voice came from behind me.
A flash of triumph appeared in Sophie’s eyes before she went crazy and lunged at me, kicking my stitched–up abdomen.
I was already anemic. If the wound reopened and I bled out, I could pass out from shock.
Arthur knew this too.
I tried to run, but Arthur grabbed me tightly from behind. I couldn’t move.
Chapter 5
“Have you had enough, Leslie?”
“I’m the one who wronged you, not her.”
“I won’t let you hurt her!”

In the struggle, Sophie kicked my abdomen several more times.
I thought I heard the sound of muscles tearing, and then drops of blood hit the floor.
The pain spread from my abdomen to every part of my body.
Cold sweat broke out all over my back.
Every muscle felt like it was spasming.
I bit my lip, trying to stay conscious.
But my vision went black, and I couldn’t see anything.
Arthur’s panicked voice echoed in my ears.
“Sophie, that’s enough! You can’t harm the place that gave life to my child!”
I gradually lost consciousness, and when I woke up, I was in the hospital.
The wound on my abdomen had been stitched up again.
“Your wound got infected, and you’ve had a persistent fever. Are

you feeling–any better now?”
Arthur looked exhausted, his lips dry and chapped.

He touched my forehead, his eyes filled with undisguised worry.
I felt no gratitude, only a wave of nausea.
I pushed his hand away and grabbed my phone, ready to call the police and have Sophie arrested.
Just as I was about to dial, Arthur snatched the phone from me, his tone unintentionally threatening.
“If you press charges against Sophie, I can’t guarantee I won’t fight for custody of our daughter!”
“Arthur, what right do you have to fight for custody?”
My voice grew sharp with emotion.
“As her father! If you insist on pressing charges against Sophie, I’ll delay the divorce for two years. And about the custody of our daughter…”
He paused, staring into my eyes.
“I won’t give up custody of our daughter.”
I’ve been with him for many years, through countless hardships.
Time has made me stronger.
Chapter 5
But he’s always been clever, and to get rid of me sooner, he exploited my only weakness as a mother.
He knew I wouldn’t dare resist.
I closed my eyes, swallowing all my bitter hatred.
“Sign the papers. Let’s part ways peacefully.”
I opened my eyes, a tear falling onto the contract.

I knew it wasn’t him I couldn’t let go of, but the broken version of myself I couldn’t accept.
He pretended not to notice, placing the pen in my hand.
I quickly signed my name and pressed my fingerprint.
According to the contract, we split the assets evenly. He converted the company stocks into a large sum of cash for me.
I’m now a wealthy woman, but my chest feels tight, and I can hardly breathe.
He exhaled, his face relaxed, as if a weight had been lifted off his chest, making him feel much lighter.
We agreed to finalize the divorce tomorrow.
He got a call from Sophie and left without a second thought.
Chapter 5
1 called out to him.
He looked at me, puzzled.
1 heard my own raspy voice.
“Don’t you resent her for leaving you at your lowest point?”
He thought for a moment and calmly told me
“No matter when she appeared, she was the best gift I could receive.”
So, during those days I thought were unforgettable, he was actually glad it was me suffering with him, not Sophie.

Because he wanted the girl he loved to always live in happiness.
Sophie suddenly appeared at the door. Hearing his words, she was deeply moved. She covered her rosy lips, tears welling up in her eyes, making her look pitiful.
My voice trembled a bit.
“What about me?”
“You’re my best companion.”
He blurted out without hesitation.
I had a faint idea of the answer all along.
Chapter 5
But hearing it from him still felt like a knife to the heart.
In the end, as I watched them walk away together, I couldn’t shed another tear.

When I loved him the most, I had endless courage to face any
obstacle.
Now that the hard times are over. I look at the smooth road ahead but can’t take a single step.
