I climbed into the passenger seat. He’d just had major surgery, but I wanted the company.
As he carefully bundled me into a scarf and gloves, tears slipped down my checks. I couldn’t pinpoint why–maybe it was his steady presence through all of this, maybe it was his ability to give without needing answers.
He sighed, almost to himself, “Maybe I planned these investments just to get you into that CEO role.”
My eyes widened.
“What, getting soft on me now that you got what you wanted?” I asked, wiping my face. “Hoping I’d melt and make room for you?”
He chuckled, scratching his nose.
“Caught me.”
