Q
Carter must’ve seen my comment. He called shortly after, his tone dismissive.
“They’re just joking around. Why are you always overthinking things?”
“Brielle was sick–I had to take care of her. Are you seriously upset about that”
“When she’s feeling better, I’ll help you plan the engagement again. I’ll even go with you to pick out your wedding dress. Happy now?”
Unmoved, I replied flatly, “Anything else? I’m busy.”
He paused on the other end, likely caught off guard by my indifference.
In the past, I would’ve been furious over Brielle’s suggestive posts and demanded answers, only to be met with Carter’s scolding.
“Why are you so sensitive? This is just how close friends act. I’m not cutting off a lifelong friendship because you’re jealous. Look in the mirror–your behavior is ridiculous.”
But now, I felt nothing.
Before he could say more, I hung up.
The police asked me to identify my attackers, but I was also eager to find the stranger who had saved me. Unfortunately, he was long gone.
Meanwhile, Brielle’s latest post showed her in a sultry satin slip dress, leaning against a man who had his arm around her. Though his face wasn’t visible, the caption read:
“Sweet dreams tonight.”
She was in my bedroom.
I didn’t belong there anymore.
This time, I wasn’t going back to stumble upon one of their “surprises” like before.

This time, I wasn’t going back to stumble upon one of their “surprises” like before.
When Carter scrambled to explain Brielle’s previous antics, he’d been laughably unconvincing..
“She got drunk, and I couldn’t just leave her at the bar. That’s why I brought her Don’t get the wrong idea.”
Brielle had chimed in shamelessly, “Yeah, we’re just friends. Don’t overthink it.”
Sure. Friends who bathe together and “accidentally” end up half–naked.
When I returned to pack my things, I texted Carter ahead of time.
Q A
I wanted to give him enough notice to prepare whatever excuse and clean up whatever mess might’ve been left behind.
The room was spotless. He’d even taken the time to clean, something I’d never seen him
do before.
“Where have you been these past few days?” he asked, feigning concern.
“Hospital.”
“You were sick?” His tone was suddenly caring.
The old me would’ve been touched.
But I’d seen too much.
“Just my eyes.”
“What about your eyes?”
“I couldn’t see people clearly,” I replied coldly “But now I can.”
Relieved, he smiled, “That’s good. It’s important to see things clearly.”

I nodded.
Because now, I truly did.
