I froze in terror, my scalp prickling as fear washed over me. My legs felt weak, and when I tried to run, I stumbled and fell.
The two men drew closer, reeking of sweat and booze.

Their eyes lit up as they rummaged through my bag, confirming my words.
“Don’t worry. I won’t call the cops. I didn’t see anything,” I pleaded, voice shaking. “I’ll just leave–right now…”
My legs barely held me up as cold sweat dripped down my spine. I looked at them almost as if begging, silently hoping they wouldn’t kill me to cover their tracks.
But they blocked my way.
“What’s the rush? Spend the night with us, and you can leave tomorrow,” one of them sneered, his smile wicked.
My face turned deathly pale as I instinctively stepped backward.
The man lunged at me, and I used every ounce of my strength to kick him where it hurt.
He fell to the ground, howling in pain, but his partner retaliated with a hard slap across my face. “You wanna play tough, huh?”
He waved a small blade in front of me, the glint of the knife sending chills down my spine. “One wrong move, and I’ll carve up that pretty face of yours.”
Summoning what courage I had left, I lashed out again, this time striking him in the groin.
The man doubled over, clutching himself in pain, but in his anger, he drove the knife into my abdomen.

Q
The man doubled over, clutching himself in pain, but in his anger, he drove the knife into
my abdomen.
It hurt–a pain so sharp it took my breath away. Blood spilled uncontrollably from the
wound.
Realizing what they had done, the two men sobered up instantly and fled the scene in a
panic.
With the last of my strength, I fumbled for my phone and dialed 911.
The location was remote, and I knew help wouldn’t arrive quickly.
Carter was closer–he hadn’t gone far. I called him repeatedly, but each time, he hung up.
Finally, he answered, his tone impatient. “Brielle’s allergic reaction is serious! Can you stop being so dramatic?”
I could barely move my lips. “Help… me… I’m bleeding…”
” “Skylar Quinn!” His voice was full of frustration. “Why do you always pull stunts like this when I’m with Brielle? If it’s not some illness, it’s some other issue. Don’t you ever get tired of these games? Because I’m sick of them!”
“Brielle’s really not feeling well today. Can you have a little empathy for once?” he snapped.
My breathing grew weaker. All I could manage were faint, pained sounds, but he remained indifferent.
“Cut it out, Skylar! Even if you die tonight, I’m not leaving Brielle to come see you.”
He hung up, his voice cold and final.
I lay there on the ground, overwhelmed by despair, waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
As I teetered on the edge of unconsciousness, a figure appeared above me.
“Ma’am, are you okay? Hold on–I’ll get you to the hospital!”

A passerby, a good Samaritan, had saved me.
At the hospital’s ER, I lay there for what felt like an eternity, certain I was c
not for the stranger’s timely intervention, I wouldn’t have survived.
Carter never called.
.o death.
Brielle, however, was busy on Instagram Stories:
“Who wouldn’t want a bestie who’s always there for you? I just had a minor allergic reaction, and he stayed by my side for 24 hours. Can’t help but love him!”
The picture? Carter peeling fruit for her. She looked rosy–cheeked and sweetly content.
The comments flooded with admiration:
“You two are such a vibe! Perfect together!”
“Twenty years of history? You’ve gotta tie the knot already–I can’t wait to send wedding gifts!”
I took a sip of hot soup, typed a short comment, and hit send:
“Wishing you two a lifetime of happiness.”
